“Well worth a visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

We stayed for one night on a Groupon deal bought by our son and his girlfriend as a gift. Wem itself is a bit tired now with very few shops. A trip to Shrewsbury for shopping is probably recommended. The hotel itself is in a quiet area set in its own gardens. On arrival, the hotel has a sweeping gravel drive with lots of trees. The outside of the hotel is not really anything special but as soon as you walk through the door, it has the wow factor. It has been traditionally renovated with lots of thought. My first stop was the ladies powder room...a big space, lovely white soft face cloths to wipe your hands on and nice toiletries. The checkin at reception was simple and the staff throughout the hotel were brilliant. We had upgraded to room 4 which is the Chandler Suite. It was amazing; so luxurious with a stunning decor and 4 poster bed. Big windows open up to the gardens and the sound of birds twittering which is lovely. The spa bath was lovely and everything was spotlessly clean. Breakfast and afternoon tea were included in our deal and both were excellent. The hotel restaurant does not open Mondays. We did know this when we booked and looked into the area. Hotel staff recommended a few places to eat. We went to the Fox pub which is about 100 yards away. The food was very good value and plentiful. All in all, we cannot fault The Old Rectory and its excellent staff. We have booked to return later in the year for 2 nights in our wonderful suite again and this time the restaurant will be open! Can't wait to try it as the breakfast was brilliant.

Room Tip: Upgrade to half Corona or room 4

My husband and i stayed at the Old Rectory Hotel a couple of days ago.
The Hotel is set in a piecefull location and is a great place to relax and unwind.
We booked with a groupon voucher and paid £20 extra to upgrade to a large room with a four poster bed and a spa bath. The room was beautifully decorated and very clean.
we had afternoon tea - sandwiches, cake, coffee and mulled wine.
The staff were all very helpfull and went out of their way to make sure our stay was plesent.
we will be booking this hotel again the near future but for longer than one night !

although this title may sound strange it describes our experience. The hotel is located at the very edge of a housing estate and the first thing you see as you go in the drive is a 'building site' of a derelict building. However within seconds you approach the main entrance which is striking and the car park is well laid out. Unfortunately the weather wasn't suitable to walk around the grounds.
Although we arrived early we were told we only had to wait 10 minutes for our room. We sat in the lounge and had tea and coffee, which arrived promptly.
When we went to the room it was freezing, when we phoned reception the staff member said she would turn the heating back on. We had afternoon tea in the lounge (which was slightly over crowded with furniture) The food was lovely sandwiches, cake, tea and a glass of prosecco. Unfortunately it all arrived together and without small plates. This presentation spoilt it a bit. It also took staff well over an hour to clean the table although there was nobody else in the lounge at this time. When we got back to the room the heating was off again, but a member of staff gave us a heater. Very draughty windows and the view was split in 2- garden and working area
The dining room is nice, well spaced tables but the lighting is too bright for a cosy dinner. The menu was varied and food and wine reasonably priced. My meal was barely warm although my husbands was hot - a freshly cooked steak. I know meals can be sent back but that does mean that you don't eat together so I didn't say anything. Breakfast was lovely good choice and hot.

Staff were pleasant and helpful and I am sure that with a few 'teaks' the hotel would have had a better rating from me. I am unable to answer honestly about value as this stay was bought as a gift so have given average. I didn't see a lift.

What a lovely hotel - a first visit to the area and we couldnt have been more happy. We stayed for two nights and ate dinner in the hotel both evenings. The hotel is lovely, the staff welcoming and very helpful. So good, we have booked to return next month - again for two nights, I cant wait!

My husband and I have just returned from a one night stay at The Old Rectory Hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff were very helpful and attentive and the food was delicious. Afternoon tea on arrival was an added bonus. Our room was clean and tastefully decorated.

The only negative for me was that Wem itself was abit rundown but ideal to visit nearby Shrewsbury.

my partner brought me here as a surprise for my birthday. the location is in a nice quiet area, and although opposite a small housing estate, due to its large grounds you feel like youre in the middle of nowhere. the room was very spacious, as was the bathroom and was also very tastefully decorated. the view from the bedroom window was nice (overlooking the garden) but maybe the items piled up against the wall at the back of the overflow car park need to be moved elsewhere? not that it was a problem when we stayed, as it was the start of january, but the window could do with a catch to help keep it open? also the bed was made up of two single mattresses, now i know this is common practice in a lot of hotels but it was very noticeable in our room.
we dined in the hotel each night of our stay and the food was of a good quality (i had steak both nights as it was that good) and the prices were very reasonable. breakfast was also of a good quality and also selection for a hotel this size was great
the only downside for me, and in my opinion it was due to the time of year, was that the staff could be more engaging. the lady in charge of the restaurant (probably a duty manager running the bar and restaurant at a night time) was great, and the young waitress on our second night was also friendly but the waiter running breakfast on our second day said hardly anything and he kept darting into the kitchen to speak to the chef. however as it was right at the start of january, and no doubt after a busy christmas all the staff wanted to do was shut down and as there was only ourselves and one other couple staying at that time i can easily understand this. all in all worth a second visit

Had a lovely stay with a group on voucher. Good value for money. We stayed in the bridal suite. Had a lovely evening meal and a really nice breakfast. The surrounding area is quiet but very relaxing. Would definately go to this hotel again.
