We just returned from our tenth year doing Taos Ski Valley's "Learn to Ski Better" program, and we certainly do. Hotel St. Bernard gives you a package deal that includes 7 nights lodging, 6 days lift tickets, 6 days ski lessons, and 3 gourmet meals per day. The hotel is located right on the ski mountain so stopping midday for lunch is easy (and if you have the unusually fine ski lessons in the morning, you feel you deserve to eat a hearty lunch of homemade soup, entree, and dessert). Jean Mayer, the owner of the St. Bernard is also the director of the ski instructors, and at close to 70 years old, can still outski the best of us. He makes sure the meals are healthy as well as delicious, so that you have the energy and nutrition to ski well. The rooms at the St. Bernard are not glamourous--no phones, no cable TV, but the VCR-TV combo units work fine with the library of videos available in the St. Bernard sun room. The hotel does have free wireless internet now, which allows you to keep in touch with the outside world if you want to.
Peter, Patou, Erica, Leif, Evan, Janet are just a few of the wonderful St. Bernard staff members who are just waiting to help you. Don't miss the stretch classes offered every morning. You'll be ready to hit the slopes after Cyndy gets you warmed up. You can take your first run in the morning with Olympic gold medalist Deb Armstrong three days a week.
The ski school is ranked as one of the best, and if you think you don't need ski lessons, you should still try Taos Ski Valley's ski school. You will be matched with others in your class that have very similar skills, and your instructor will show you all the best places on the mountain to ski in your ability.
The snow of 2007 has been spectacular, and we were able to see areas of the mountain that aren't always open every year.
Even if it isn't a good snow year, I highly recommend the St. B.
