I stayed at the Garden Hotel in Yingtan during a recent business trip to Jiangxi. It was a reasonable enough place to spend the night but nothing exceptional, pretty much a typical Chinese business hotel. I don’t think they get too many foreigners there. The location was OK, on the edge of the new city along the banks of the river. The river bank has been developed into a park and is a great place for a morning run or walk. There are no shops or restaurants very close, requiring a short drive or 15-20 minute walk to reach some shops – a little inconvenient if you want to pick up a few quick snacks.
The first thing I noticed when I entered the room was that is smelled of cigarette smoke. The carpets were looking a little worn but the room in general looked to be clean, as were the sheets. It was quite cold in there upon entering but the wall heater got things heated up in about 15 minutes. The furnishings in the room were typical cheap Chinese furniture, but fairly new and well-maintained. The bed was hard but not too uncomfortably so. I would’ve had a good sleep, except for the power tools turning on and off half the night next door – some kind of construction going on and the rooms aren’t that well sound insulated. The wall between the bathroom and the bedroom is a plate glass window – not good for privacy, but kind of a neat feature! The shower was good and hot – no complaints there. The computer desk came with a desktop computer, but I just used the free internet connection (slow) and my own laptop.
The service was standard for a Chinese business hotel – uninspiring. Check-in and check-out seemed to go fairly smoothly. No one there spoke any English, as I doubt too many foreigners ever stay there. The free breakfast was typical uninspiring Chinese fare. I made do with boiled eggs and fried rice as I choked on cigarette smoke from other diners.
Overall I’d say it was reasonable value for what it was, around $35 per night. It wasn’t a bad place for an overnight stop, but if I were staying for any length of time, I would opt for somewhere else. I wouldn’t really recommend it to others as there must be better options in Yingtan.
