“The best of Omaruru”

What a surprise and even more so that we had never heard of Chris and his self contained universe of Gourmet food, eclectic art and timeless renovation - not to mention the laid back and generous character of the man himself. We arrived tired and hungry after dark on Friday night and he offered to throw together a quick meal for us which was a fantastic start to a weekend that felt more like we were staying with an old friend that just a B&B. What a great place to chill and get to know a town that we usually just drive through. We will have a go at the home cured bacon tip - thanks Chris - and compare notes the next time we are in town.

Room Tip: The family room with 2 bedrooms and 5 beds was perfect for the 4 of us

How do you write a review of a place lake this? Yes, the beds were very comfortable. Yes, the rooms were nice and tidy. Yes, the kitchen was fully equipped if you wanted self-catering. And yes, it is all convenient with its central location. But that is not why you will return. This is Chris' place with his very special photography in the Gallery, with his combined shop and café serving the most tasteful breakfast ever and the whole style of the place with air and light and colours. And then some conversation with Chris, this multi-talented American in the middle of Namibian beautiful nowhere. Enough of me now - plan a trip to Omaruru and to Chris and stay a night or more in Eveneing Shade! Go ahead! :-)

Room Tip: We were booked in the smaller of two family rooms with a total of five beds in wo bed rooms. Excelle...

Evening shade is a quirky, classy cool oasis in the desert. We stopped by for a night, then like a magnet it kept pulling us back.
It is extremely comfortable and gorgeous. The design + finishings are exquisite, and show the artistic character of the cool proprietor, photographer, Chris Johnston. There is an attention to detail (like awesome linen + 4-poster mossie nets, copper finishes) that you do not usually find in self-catering accommodation. The whole place is a low-key artwork designed for aesthetic pleasure and sensual comfort. It's linked to Johnston's Photo gallery: a display of spectacular Namibian images infused with dry humour and philosophical explorations.

Evening shade is just behind the restaurant, Main Street Cafe, which has the most delicious gourmet meals and faint-with-delight fresh-made puddings (strawberry yoghurt, butternut cheesecake, bread-and-butter pudding, beetroot torte, I ate them all, and came back for more).

Evening shade, and the neighbouring gallery and restaurant, create a sublime feast for all the senses, at extremely reasonable prices. Even if Omaruru is not on your route, I'd recommend you make a detour for this experience.

Room Tip: My favourite was the renovated room with the old maps on the wall and exposed brickwork but can'...

Had a wonderful time!!
From the traditional American style breakfast, comfortable room.
Great service, And exceptional Mix berry Cheesecake!
A slice of heaven, And with Main street cafe a 30 second walk away, I couldn't ask for a better place to have stayed..
Thanks For making my time there, one to remember.
