“absolute gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2011

Stayed two nights while trekking around Kalaw. The building was a fabulous copy of the original British colonial house alongside and also a part of the hotel. The room was superb and beautifully finished with a wood fire in the corner (it was very cold at nights). The staff were extremely helpful and charming, the gardens lovely, and the breakfast good,
Well worth a stay

Travelling off the beaten track in Burma can make you feel a little queasy to the quality of your next hotel. Amara was so unexpectedly beautiful, cosy, with extremely friendly staff and good quality of food and room that we wished we had planned to stay an extra night just to enjoy the lush gardens and the antique building.

This is like no other place you'll stay in Myanmar. It's a converted British tudor with about 10 rooms high on a hill in Kalaw. Easily the nicest place in the city, it features tidy rooms with classic decorations and nice-sized baths. It's all about location here: there's a beautiful garden and lounge chairs to just sit and read in the cool air. The on-site restaurant is fine, though the mosquitoes will drive you into the restaurant. Breakfasts were basic but good, including eggs to order and fresh local fruit and teas. The staff runs around with hats on, though it reached about 65 F at its coldest (yes, they lit a fire in the restaurant fireplace). It's a little too far to walk into town for most folks (25 minutes downhill, more back up).

Amara resort is a very nice English style hotel, and the food and staff are as good. It is in a wonderful neighbourhood though a bit far away from the town. Very good choice to relax and to get ready for you trekking.

Don't expect opulence, don't expect luxury, but what you will get is honest to goodness genuine hospitality ,excellent service, good food and a feeling of well being.
Tucked away up a lane just out of town sits this delightful little hide away. A warm welcome awaits, and a guided tour of the garden, where many of the ingredients are grown for the kitchen , like herbs and lettuce of many varities Chairs were placed on the lawn so we could watch sunset with our favourite tipple.
The hotel manageress, ( pronounced Moo Moo, like the cow sound ) stated that we were to treat it like home , not like a hotel. Our room was spacious and clean, and the bed comfortable. The food was of a good standard, and special requests were catered for, if possible. All the staff went one step further to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. Subsequently this establishment we enjoyed very much, and would return just to chill out. One point on the negative side, is the two rooms in the reception area would be noisy due to the phone, and the general nature of duties required of reception.
Not much to do in the surrounding area, apart from a two mile drive to Pindaya to visit the caves, to see thousands of Buddha images, placed there by pilgrims over the centuries. in different shapes and sizes, then of course the 59 km- two hour return drive. Also you could take a walk, a guide recommended , to Pein Nei Pin, village of the Palaung tribe. Bearing in mind that the ascent is all uphill, not for the unfit ,but great scenery.
In conclusion this establishment is just the ticket when a bit of free time is needed just to unwind, breath in and smell the coffee, get off the tourist trail for a while, relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Can't praise the staff at the Amara too highly. They are friendly, attentive and go out of their way to make you feel special. The resort itself is quiet and well appointed. Great restaurant. Five stars from me!
