Owner description: Edzell Castle is enchanting. The red sandstone castle walls, set amid pleasing green parkland, conjure up an image of a noble bygone age. Medieval society was not all fighting and feuding. Everyday lordly life in late-medieval rural Scotland is more readily understood at Edzell than at most castles.Edzell was home to the Lindsays. When they acquired the estate in 1358, the lordly seat was a timber residence beside the ancient church. During the 16th century, they built a brand-new castle a short distance away – the one we admire today. The ‘icing on the cake’ of their new residence was the wonderful ‘great garden’, added in 1604.

“Beautiful and evocative castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2012

We visited Edzell Castle today for the first time and what a thoroughly enjoyable place to see it was. The castle is basically ruins but the walled gardens are amazing. The staff were very helpful and also pointed out quite a few other local sights to see whilst we were there. What made my day however, was the peacocks! One was sitting right next to the gate and when it saw me it did it's full "show", demonstrating its beautiful tail feathers and even appeared to be posing for photographs! It was a very noisy bird but looked absolutely beautiful. The ruins are fascinating and the layout of the castle buildings intriguiging. On a beautiful day the gardens looked fantastic and although it's still early for the best floral display, the box hedges were beautifully kept. Well worth a visit and if it's a nice day take a picnic!

“Surprisingly Good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2012

We visited Edzell castle during our trip to Scotland and Ireland. We drove to some highland games and on the way back, took some side roads and found the beautiful and picturesque town of Edzell. It's a small town but very nice. We saw the signs for Edzell Castle and drove by it but it was closed. We were sure it would be worth a return trip. Seeing it from the gravel drive way, it didn't look like much. We decided to visit it the next day anyway.

The price to get in was modest and the staff were extremely friendly. We entered the castle area and were surprised to see the beautiful garden area. It had stone plaques around the edges with carvings of various areas of study, etc. It had a beautiful sculpted garden. There were birds everywhere because of the built in bird nests in the stone walls. The garden was a very pleasant surprise.

The castle itself is very much a ruin. There isn't much left of it but there is enough there to get your imagination going about what it was before.

It was a nice side excursion and well worth it. The pictures we have of the town and the gardens are some of our favorites. I recommend a visit.

Beautiful old castle ruins and a lovely and clever walled garden...with the memorable peacocks...who strutted around and helped us eat the picnic.
