We (Me and my wife) went to Pepper County on the last week of August, and it was a most cherished and memorable 3 days and 2 nights we had, which we will never forget. This was our first visit to a homestay, and Cyriac Uncle and Dolly Aunty quite placed us amongst them with warmth and friendliness. We were the only other guest at that time and the climate around was just awesome for couples, slow drizzly rain and cold... The room in which we were accommodated was nicely arranged, cozy and clean. The homestay is a little away from the main Kumily town, so its quite calm and serene. Cyriac Uncle and the whole family were quite helpful in all our queries and helped us in all way to roam around this beautiful place. The day we reached there, we went for a Kathakali and Kalaripayattu show, which were organized in Mudra Auditorium situated at the main Kumily Town. The next day, we went around the Periyar Sanctuary, Boat rides etc. and it was a scintillating experience. (Although Periyar is know for their tigers and Elephant herds, don't go with high hopes of seeing them. You will be damn lucky, if you can spot one! But the experience you will have would be awesome). And the rain was always drizzling slowly and weather was cold, so that counts in for a nice experience. And after the day long affair in the Jungle, there's always a nice and cozy room for you at the Pepper County....
This review will be incomplete if I don't write about Dolly Aunty. She is one of the best cook I have ever seen, whose home made food I have tasted. If you are a non-vegan, don't forget to taste her meen-curry (Fish Curry) and Fish Fry. It was like 'awesome'. Her other delicacies like Chiratta Puttu etc. were all delicious. She is, as with Cyriac Uncle, very friendly and warm.
Their grandson, Chandi kunju is quite adorable, who lives with Uncle and Aunty. Uncle also showed us around his plantations, although due to rain the way was slippery. There were quite a number of Spice plantations (Cardamom, Pepper, and other common Indian Spices).
Uncle also showed us a good shop for purchasing some spices, which are so famous from Kumily.
This was a great trip, and as I said at the beginning, we will never forget the warmth and experiences we had with this Homestay.
I will definitely recommend anyone looking out for a stay in and around Kumily. And definitely we will plan a trip there again sometimes.
