“Nice!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2013

We stayed for 2 nights in this hotel. The hotel looks like a big businesshotel you can find anywhere in the world, it is not very charming.

But ... the rooms are very spacious, light and clean, the bathroom is fine. Breakfastbuffet has everything you can imagine, and there is a nice garden/terrace with swimmingpool. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Location is great, just a 5 minute walk from the busstation and in the middle of Nakuru-centre.

I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: take a room with poolside, when the weather is good you can also see the lake

Welcome to the dance club.

I'm wearing earplugs and headphones over my earplugs and I can still hear lyrics.
The bass is making the walls rattle. My glass nearly fell off my table.
The bed is shaking. I'm so tired.
See title.

The Merica Hotel is one of those big Kenyan hotels built in the 1970's - hotels like this can sometimes be rundown, but Merica was a nice experience. It could do with some renovations, but the hotel does all of the basics right. Rooms were adequate, had mosquito nets and hot water, and service was quite good. The hotel also has a swimming pool, and very busy gym. The hotel restaurant was quite good - I love Kenyan food, so it was nice that the hotel focused on fresh, tasty local food.

If the hotel would improve on a few things, I could easily give it 4 or 5 stars. Although the hotel itself has a lot of character, the rooms themselves are really due for some upgrades. They were comfortable enough, but some small improvements (more electric plugs, new paint, better water pressure, better lighting, functioning WIFI) would make a huge difference.

Stayed on first floor with family. Confirmed room booking cancelled, had to beg to get the two of them back. Sewer not breathing adequately so room bathroom stinks, besides filthy bathtub, sink and shower curtains. Got another wash, not much help. Dinner and breakfast expansive, mediocre and way overpriced for what is served. Both rooms dump and moldy and way overpriced for the sparse, cheap furniture, linen and browning white towels (if you stay bring your own). We could live with these inconveniences in an emergency; but the disco noise from across the road way too loud, coming through the windows as if they did not exist; it finally stopped just past 4.00am and we finally slept. Our teenager's room was not habitable for many reasons but especially the disco noise, spent the night with us. Try something else, especially just outside Nakuru.

Room Tip: If you must, choose one on the other side of the building from the main road. Do not fall for the sh...

The two discos on main road and the fact that the large window panes are not noise proof! whaaaaaa! Not even my double earplugs worked! The disco is until 04:00 or whole night! I just know the net morning we were bitter than a lemon! Good luck we went to Arbedares country club!

Merica Hotel used to be under German management with a view to details to comfort the busy traveler. We occupied a junior suite which was quite disappointing because there was not any decoration to make the room attractive. It was so uncomfortable that most of the time we had to stay at the outside verandah restaurant which is quite comfortable and with an excellent service. The menu is large and needs an overhaul because many dishes are not available. the breakfast coffee is very disappointing because instead of freshly brewed Kenya coffee the hotel serves hot water with coffee in small sachets. What a disappointment! the check in and payment of the bill was quite Ok and I noted a smile with the workers at the reception. All in all, value for money is not given and it is just overpriced.

Been to this hotel a number of times. Initially, service was awesome. My last visit this year was different. The service has dropped to average. Most of the staff looked tired and demotivated. Service with a smile. Can do better.
