“Nicely upgraded, a high quality hostel in a location to die for”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

Ratagan YH has always been one of my favourites but since my last stay they have replaced the dining room tables and chairs and upgraded the lounge. On top of the existing good facilities this is now a really excellent hostel. The family room we had was spacious clean and characterful. The location, by the loch and looking out over the 5 sisters is stunning.
My only gripe is that the drying room is poorly designed and small (given this is a wet part of the country) and rather Heath Robinson - why can't they spend a few pounds on better hangars etc?

I stayed here for a week while hillwalking in Kintail. Perfect location. Friendly wardens. noisy metal beds in the dormitories but who cares. Great cooking facilities. Craft beers at £3 a bottle. Internet access £3 an hour. Need to be out between 10.30 ans 5pm but this is not a problem when there is so much fantastic hillwalking nearby.

My first ever stay in a youth hostel, Ratagan has set the bar pretty high.
The location on the banks of Loch Duich is simply out of this world. as a base for hill walking it cant be beaten.
My bed was ok and the room was warm. i just about got used to living out of my case. there are no wardrobes or drawers provided.
The drying room was poor. Wet clothes left overnight were still damp but after 6 minutes in the tumble drier £0.20 my gear was sorted.
4 hobs in the kitchen but only one oven and one microwave so a bit of congestion was to be expected at breakfast time.
2 Munroes bagged, a cracking trip.

Due to a tight schedule, we decided to push on to Glenshiel and not stay over on the Ilse of Skye. Turned out to be a good decision as Ratagan Youth Hostel is ideally located for those who wanted to take the ferry from Kylerhea to Glenelg and still find a scenic location to stay on the mainland. Even for those who opted to take the bridge out of the Ilse of Skye, this hostel is a good stopover. If time is tight, the Eilean Donan Castle can be done in the late evening like we did on the day we arrived. Staying over at Ratagan gives one a good 1 - 2 hour start to the next day's journey compared to starting from any point in the Ilse of Skye.

The hostel has everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and the kitchen is open through the night - which is so helpful for those of us needing to leave early. There is also a cosy sitting room to unwind.

Ratagan YH delivers everything it promises. . It's one of the best hostels we have come across in our journey through Scotland. The staff attending to us is bright, cheerful and informative - - did not get her name but she said she is from Ilse of Skye.

Spent two nights at this lovely Youth Hostel at the bank of Loch Duich. Stunning views of the Five Sisters and the Loch, particularly during sunset and sunrise. The hostel are clean and tidy with a cosy lounge and a big, spacious and well equipped kitchen!! Free tea and coffee powder near the hot water machine. Friendly and helpful staffs. Great location to spot wildlife at the doorstep, frequent visitor is Porpoises (relative of Dolphins), often spotted feeding in the Loch. It’s an ideal location for nature lovers who enjoy walking and hiking (details of walks at walkhighlands.co.uk).

The only critic would be the female dorm does seem congested with 4 bunk beds, sharing a toilet and a shower. I could imagine when it is fully occupied in summer, things might get a bit unpleasant. The hostel is very near to Eilean Donan Castle (15 min drive) and Kyle of Lochalsh. The hostel does provide simple breakfast at £3.95, which comes in buffet style with crusty bread, yogurt, fruit jelly, cereals and drinks (tea and coffee).

It would be best to have a car if you would like to stay here, as it is quite remote without supermarket or restaurant within 1.5 miles. However, we survived by taking public transport, the nearest bus stop is 1.5 miles away at Shiel Bridge (Citylink Bus), it took ½ hours to walk to the hostel. Honestly, we did enjoy the walk as the view along the way was spectacular plus a few friendly ponies. A local bus operated by MacRae Kintail stop at a bus stop 200m away from the hostel. Please take note that it only operates 1 service each day (9.00am/10.15am), return (11.35am/13.35pm) from Kyle of Lochalsh, the single fare is £3.45 and return fare is around £5. You could request to stop at Eilean Donan Castle.

Owing to the stunning views, I would definitely come back again. Highly recommended!!

The hostel is placed in a stunning location in front of Loch Duich. The place is very charmeful. You can enjoy the beautiful view from your room and the calm & the silence.
You can use this hostel as base-place in order to visit Eilean Donnan Castle and the Skye Island.

Scotland is probably one of the best place i've ever seen in my life!!!

I stayed here for a hillwalking trip in September 2011. The hostel is in a stunning location on the edge of Loch Duich with wonderful views of the Five Sisters and lots of opportunity for seeing wildlife even just from the front door. It was a really good base for hillwalking, and if I'd stayed for longer Glencarron and Skye would also have been within reasonable driving distance.

Initially I was in a private 5-bedded room with friends, then when I stayed on afterwards on my own I moved to the female dormitory. The 5-bedded room was really nice and spacious, with one double and 3 singles (one a bunk) which suited our group perfectly. It was mid-week in September when I stayed on, so it was pretty quiet in the dormitory. However, I can imagine it could feel pretty cramped when full, as other reviewers have commented, as there wasn't a lot of spare floor space, and there might have been competition for the bathroom if there had been more people.

The rest of the hostel was very nice, with lots of communal space both in the dining room and the lounge, and there were lots of interesting posterboards and folders with local information. The wardens were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and a mine of information on the area. There was a good drying room, kitchen, and washing facilities, and everything felt clean and well-organised without being stuffy.

Overall I felt that this was a high quality hostel compared to other SYHA hostels I've stayed in and I would definitely recommend it.
