I visited this pub/restaurant in April and enjoyed it enough to return with friends. This proved to be a mistake.
Firstly, we sat at a table in the bar area at 7pm and despite being given menus immediately (without asking for them) and saying we wanted to have a couple of drinks before ordering food, we were asked three times in fifteen minutes (by different waiting staff) whether we were ready to order. In the end I returned the menus to the bar to ensure we were left alone, and regained them just before eight when we were ready to order.
On ordering we were advised that there was about 20 minutes wait, which was fine. Eventually it came after 40 minutes (and after we had reminded the waiter after half an hour).
The food when it came was disappointingly poor given my previous experience. Two of us had cod and chips, but in both cases the fish was raw in the centre. As it was also quite watery it seemed that it had not been properly defrosted and thus not cooked through. These were sent back (another portion or an alternative was offered but refused as it was too late by that time). I had the pie and mash, which was edible although the meat was tough, with a number of pieces of gristle in it. I left half of it.
The young waiter was friendly and polite (not his fault the food wasn’t ready on time), and the front of house lady was very good in handling the situation, and very apologetic about serving uncooked fish. We weren’t charged for the fish, of course, and she knocked one of the rounds of drinks from our bill, so there are no complaints about her. It’s just a shame that the chef was not as good at his (or her) job as she was.
I also thought it quite expensive for what it was, and the drinks at £3.90 per pint of bitter and £4.50 for lager a bit over the top too.
In my previous review I said I would return. I did, but on this occasion the kitchen let it down. Whether there has been a change of chef, or stand-in due to holiday I don’t know, but on the basis of this visit it will be some time before I go back again.
