My wife and I visited Doune Castle on a lovely Saturday morning in November. We were very pleasantly surprised to have the castle to ourselves. The staff member in the reception/gift shop was incredibly friendly and helpful and gave us advice on where next to visit in the area. The facilities in the small gatehouse were lovely and immaculately clean.
The castle itself is well worth a visit, and I would definitely recommend purchasing the guidebook which was incredibly reasonably priced at around £3.50.
The castle offers a nice insight into life and the political situation in the 14th century. It also feels strangely familiar due to its appearances in numerous TV and film productions including Monty Python’s The Life of Brian. The roof offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape and river.
I will definitely return. An attraction well worth a visit. Reasonably priced and very interesting.
