“Nice all inclusive, easy location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

We have been to Costa Rica many times, and we are a family in our thirties with a child. This resort is 80% Costa Rican and 20% american/other nationalities. It is the closest all inclusive to San Jose.

The good: close to many tours, great pools, the best drinks we have had in Costa Rica, good food and it has 8-10 gluten free marked items, sunny weather in the rainy season, close to the ferry. The swim up bars are fantastic. Great kids club activities and lots of kids here. The beds are good and the ocean view is great. Our room was renovated and nice. We had plenty of towels.

There is a great walking pier to see the sunset with a bar in the middle of it. There are chairs for sitting. Great for watching surfers too.
Pools are open till 8:00, which is unusual in CR.

The location: it is close to San Jose, a few hours away from Monteverde, Poas, Peace Lodge, manuel Antonio, Jaco, etc...

The bad: the beach is not swim able but it's great for surfing/boogie boarding, the restaurants are stuffy and the lobby is unbearably hot with no breeze, the checkin is the worst i have had in Costa Rica. It's just a poor design, but it didn't cause us to enjoy the resort less.

There are better AI options in Costa Rica, but they are in Guanacaste and much farther from San Jose. It made a great relaxing place for a few days in the middle of our vacation. We went from the Peace Lodge to here and then on to Manuel Antonio.

The staff really make this lovely property and all inclusive a special place. There are activities all day & evening for all ages-beach volleyball, water volleyball, karaoke . Great drinks and bar staff. Food service/buffets are nicely set up and wristbands are needed. Rooms are clean and well maintained. We were in building 3. Security is located at every corner of the property and they ask for sign in/out. They are cautious and I interpret this as the staff wanting vacationers to have a safe and good time. Beach is a black sand. Walking pier is also available. Nightly entertainment/shows with lovely costumes showcase local talent are fair but the people seem to enjoy it. Many pools available with swim up bars.

Two friends, my wife and I spent 10 days at this resort during Easter week /Semana Santa which happened to be their busiest week of the year. Reservations are absolutely necessary as this hotel turned out to be a favorite vacation destination for locals of the nearby capital and other major cities of Costa Rica. In fact there were relatively few foreign tourists at the resort when we were there. For us it was a good opportunity to meet and talk to many local families to learn more about this beautiful country. We stayed at one of the newer wings of the hotel and were given rooms with balconies facing the adult pool and the sea which are normally reserved for Hilton Honor members. The rooms had comfortable beds, AC, free WiFi and cable tv. The bath rooms were ok but in our opinion require refurbishing. This is also true of most of the public bath rooms throughout the resort. The hotel features several pools including a big pool area where most of the activities in particular for the children took place. Although the resort is located right at the beach, swimming in the ocean is not recommended because of rough waves and a strong undertow. Neither does the beach look very inviting. The food at the always crowded buffets was just ok but nothing special. The drinks at the various bars were super and so were the natural fruit juices at the juice bar. Fortunately we were allowed to have dinner at the two specialty restaurants most evenings and were very pleased not only with the food but also with the very friendly and professional service which is true throughout the hotel. The highlight of the day was the "Happy Hour" and watching the incredible sunset from the resort`s own pier. The evening entertainment was mainly designed locals and Spanish speakers. We had selected the Double Tree for its relative closeness to the San Jose´Airport (little more than an hour by taxi) and all in all had a good time but would limit our stay at this resort to three or four days next time as there is really not much to do in the Puntarenas area.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the new Hilton Honor wing

We stayed in building 3 and it was nice and clean. No mold or wear as some other reviewers had stated. The resort had nice clean pools, plenty of option main, swim up bar, also a more private one by building 2. The grounds were well manicured and most of the staff had great customer service, including bar and restaurant staff. The food was okay. Overall it was a nice place to stay. The location was very close to the port so you did not have to drive far for water excursions.

Wrist bands to keep up with registrants (forced to wear plastic band for duration of 3 night stay), room smells VERY musty because no airflow, can't open windows to air out room, toilet wobbles badly (I'm from Texas and kinda like riding a bull), tub clogged with hair and drains slowly (ankle deep water by end of shower), atmosphere reminds me of Spring Break at S. Padre (not what a 45 year old is really all about), beach is clean but water is VERY dirty (not really the Hotel's fault, we can point to God on this one), drapes don't close completely, pillows are so flat they aren't really there (using the chair seat back to prop myself up), rooms, decor, fixtures in desperate need of updating (bathroom light must be from the 70's)

Pools are clean and grounds well maintained, staff is very friendly and helpful

Just checked in and definitely NOT 4 star. Haven't slept yet and haven't experienced housekeeping. But suspect it will be good.

Would rate at 2-3 stars at best for total accommodations.

Room Tip: Junior suites seem good for floor plan.

We were just there and during the World Cup!!!! What an experience. I have never heard so many people singing "Tico...Tico" It was fun. A bit not relaxing the first day, but fun. Swim up bar is great and drinks at all bars are good. Not weak like some all inclusives. The food was good, not fantastic, but good and enjoyable. The hamburger and hot dogs not, but that is a CR issue. Their hamburger and hotdogs are not like in the US. They have several pools and an adult only pool. One Con....adult only pool...NO BAR! Who thought that was a good idea...lol.

The staff were all friendly and helpful. The water aerobics were fun and in Spanish. The family show was a bit different. Part Spanish and Part English...but when in Rome?

Secret fun: On the kid side there are three very small like jacuzzi (sunken) areas with bubbles. other secret area (ok...its on the map) Hammocks! Away from the noise and such a good rest.

Lots of pool chairs and chairs facing the water. Con: water murky here. This is not where I would go to enjoy the beach. But great pool fun and lots of activities for all ages;)

Upon cchecking in, had no problems. Once we got to our room, noticed that the AC wasn't working to it's fullest and that the room wasn't working either.

After several tries with fixing the AC, they offered us a room change, but since we were in a great location (near the beach) and the fan worked excellent, we decided to stay.

There was an issue when we were checking out, but it was resolved and taken care of.

Food was great and the staff was very attentive! Lots of activities for the whole family and would recommend the stay.
