“We have had much better experiences for a lot less”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

Let me preface my review by saying, we are not picky travelers. The majority of our trip in Costa Rica was spent in modest hotels. We planned to stay two nights and three days in this resort as a relaxing get away from our otherwise adventurous trip. This turned out to be the least enjoyable part of our trip. It wasn't terrible, but for the price we paid we expected a lot more.

Food: probably the most disappointing part of all. I can't believe that people wrote on here that the food was good! We found out after checking in that because we were only staying two nights we would not have access to the two nicer restaurants on the premises. We originally didn't think that was a big deal since the other all inclusives that we have stayed at even the buffet style restaurants have been good. The buffet food here is terrible, it tastes like bad school cafeteria food. There is a wide variety but none of it was good. I do have to say that when I went to the front desk and voiced my concerns they were very helpful and allowed us to make a reservation at one of the sit down restaurants. The food there was good but you aren't going to be able to avoid the buffet for breakfast and lunch.
Entertainment: We did not find this to be an English friendly vacation spot. This wasn't necessarily a negative, we speak decent spanish and enjoy taking in local culture, however, it was difficult to understand the shows, which were only partially translated. I read another review on here that said that it is a local vacation spot on the weekends so maybe it is different during the week (we stayed Friday-Sunday).
Rooms: They were clean and big enough but again for the price I'd expect sparkling clean and nicely decorated as well. When we got there it smelled like bug spray. The following day we realized why, there were tons of little centipedes. They weren't huge or disgusting but definitely annoying and not expected for the price.
Beach and Surrounding Area: As soon as you step foot on the beach staff approaches you and makes you sign a waiver that if you get robbed you can't hold them responsible. The beach is not anything to get excited about, it's not even on the pacific, as some reviewers have written, it's in the gulf of nicoya. The view is pretty, across the gulf is another piece of land. A ferry can take you across and we heard the beaches and towns there are much nicer. We didn't get a chance to go into the city of Puntarenas, but we heard from those who did that we didn't miss much. The pools were nice and clean, there were 2 swim up bars and lots of events going on throughout the day (beach volleyball, water aerobics etc).
Staff: Overall they were fine. It was pretty busy while we were there and it felt a bit understaffed but that's not saying anything negative about the actual people working. They were helpful and nice. During our stay we called the front desk several times and most times no one answered. We had to carry our own bags on the way out and check out was confusing. Also, everyone is given a key, a towel card and a bracelet. If you lose any of them you are charged a fee. I thought we paid enough to be able to use some pool towels without the threat of having to pay 25$ if lost.

Overall I would highly recommend going somewhere else. There are a lot of other cities in Costa Rica with much more to do. I know the review sounds like we had a terrible time but really it was a mediocre time for A LOT of money. I can see how some people wrote that they had a good time, the grounds are beautiful and there is plenty to do but we expected more and got more at other not all inclusive hotels that we went to in other areas.

Location was great for getting to the adventure activities we were doing while in Costa Rica. Most were within 1.5 hours, a couple were a bit further. We went somewhere every day - ziplining, ATVs, catamaran to Tortuga Island, Jaco beach, whitewater rafting, crocodile river cruise.
The grounds were pretty and clean. The surf was pleasant. Pools were never too crowded or noisy. We stayed in early February 2013.
The buffet could have used a little more selection geared toward Canadian appetites; lots of spanish style dishes, but there was always salad and fruit. The snack bar had burgers and pizza for in between meals, so that was good too.
The casino was closed for good even though the website said it had one, but that was not an issue for us.
I would recommend this place for the location, but it is definitely not a 5 star resort, more like a 3.5 in my opinion. Clean beds and comfortable place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for the newer building. Rooms appear to be larger and better layout. A bit further to the buffet...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2013

We stayed at the Doubletree Resort by Hilton - Central Pacific (Puntarenas), Costa Rica from February 1 through 8. This was my third time doing an all-inclusive 'down south' (first time in Costa Rica/Central America), and I had a fantastic time. I went with my fiance and 2 other couples. The hotel is a 4-star by Costa Rican standards, but 3.5-star by TripAdvisor standards. It really depends how picky you are and what you are expecting.

Food: AMAZING. Great variety. They change up the dinner menu every night (Spanish, Latin American, Asian, etc.). There are 2 a la carte restaurants on-site (seafood and Latin American). Delicious! And they accommodated our group of 6 with no problem. The woman who was making the reservations in the lobby was an absolute doll. I wish I could remember her name! And we ordered the lobster one night. It was $25 USD. SO WORTH IT! The lobsters come from the Caribbean side of the country, and they are frickin' huge! So good and prepared so well, with veggies and mash potatoes. And we got to meet the chef, Jean Carlos. My fiance is a sous-chef so this was a nice treat for him. And our server, Wilkins, was amazing. Tip him well if you are ever served by him!

Drinks: They made CAESARS! If you are a Canadian, this is a big deal. They have Clamato in Costa Rica! Our favourite bartender, Jimmy, was so great. We tipped him well, and he made us shots and drinks without us even asking! The house wine is so-so, but you can order bottles off of a menu. I bought a bottle of delicious Chilean Cab Sauv for $15 so I could have it in my room. Pretty much any drink you want, you can have. They even made Rye & Gingers (again, I am Canadian).

Rooms: We booked a Junior Suite (it was $70 extra per person). A tip: In Building 1, there are the Standard Rooms. In Building 2, there are the Junior Suites. In Building 3 (the newest building), there are the Deluxe Rooms. Keep this in mind if you are traveling with a group and all want to be in the same building. I say this because 2 couples in our party upgraded to Junior Suites, and the other couple didn't so we were in different buildings. The resort grounds are not that big, so this wasn't a big deal for us. There are no fridges in the rooms - that was a disappointment. So no daily beer & water bottle refills. And you can't drink the tap water in your room, so bring refillable water bottles and take advantage of the many water coolers they have around the resort. You can drink the water at the restaurants and bar though, as it's pure-filtered.The rooms were a little beaten up, but nothing too noticeable. The beds were brand new and so comfortable. And the air conditioning system was a little loud, but kept the room cool and comfortable. Also, there are no balconies at this resort the Buildings 2 & 3 have private terraces on the first floor. Building 1 has shared terraces on the first floor.

Grounds: Pool was well-maintained and had 2 swim up bars. There is an adult only 'relaxation' pool by the lobby that was kid-free. But the main pool is divided into 2 parts and the kids mostly stayed on the left side (more shallow side). The grounds were well-maintained. Lots of lounge chairs. WARNING: The beach is a volcanic sand beach. It gets so hot during midday, that you have to wear shoes to walk on it. No one really hangs out on the beach here. It's the Pacific Ocean, so its a bit murky because of the stronger tide. Great for boogie boarding though! The hotel has these, as well as kayaks, to use free of charge. And the water is warm. It is a tourist beach, but locals are allowed to use the beach, too, as well as the surrounding beaches in the bay. The hotel staff warns you not to take any expensive belongings onto the beach (duh). We were not bothered by anyone though. But they do make you sign out if you go off the grounds to cover their butts. Makes sense! The pier was under construction, so we couldn't use the Sunset Bar or go to the end of the pier. But hey, that's life! Things need to be fixed! And it's a good sign that they are upgrading the hotel. I saw a lot of potential.

Guests: On the weekends, Ticos/Ticas from the Central Valley come to vacation here. It is very busy from Friday night until Sunday afternoon. Then very quiet on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, picking up a bit on Thursday. About 45% of the guests are Canadians.

Excursions: They are expensive ($75-$150), so plan for that. But they were worth every penny. We did zip lining at Vista Golfo (tip: the resort will sell you the package that is zip lining only - if you want horseback riding, ATVs, etc., look at other options), the Puntarenas highlights tour/safari (monkeys and crocodiles) and the Arenal Volcano/Baldi Hot Springs trip (3 hours away but AMAZING). We were able to see quite a bit of the countryside and the mountains/cloud forests. They offer a lot of excursions so choose wisely!

Travel Tips: Keep hydrated! It's very, very hot. Puntarenas is one of the hottest areas in the country. But a nice breeze comes off of the Pacific in the afternoon. Most Costa Ricans can speak pretty decent English, but you should make an effort to speak a least basic Spanish. The phrase 'Pura Vida' will get you a long way!

(I should also add that my fiance actually proposed to me on the beach at sunset during this trip, so it was especially magical. And a Costa Rican family of three generations - daughter, mother and grandmother - came up and thanked us for choosing their country and gave us kisses & hugs and congratulations. It was really special.)

I just got home from a week stay at this hotel. i loved it, and so did my 3 young kids. The grounds are beautiful, the staff all very friendly. I only wish more of the entertainment had been in english as my kids couldn't participate because they don't speak spanish. The buffet could have used a couple more "american" options. I loved all the excursions we took, i don't care that it took 2 hours to get them, part of the excitement is to site see in a new country. all of our guides were very knowledgeable, and super friendly. i highly recommend taking a cab for a 5 min drive to "la roca" to see some white faced monkeys, and the nicest family who lives there. I would go back, again, and again! These are great memories i will have forever

Room Tip: They seem to stick the "american" people in the older of the 3 buildings. guessing it'...

Food was good. Only saw a couple of guanas on property. Puntarenas is dirty and Jaco is worse. Went to see Arenal volcano. Told it was 2 hours. It is 3 hours on the windiest road. Was almost car sick. Went with friends to see the country side. Guide told me after that possible is much nicer. Arenal was okay and Lafortuna is nothing to write home about. Will never go back to doubletree. All it is is buildings, pools and beach. No property. There is much nicer places for the price. Staff was very good. Room was clean and the cleaning staff left towel animals every day. We were in building one and it was fine. Building three is suppose to be newer and quieter. And is approximately $150.00 more per week. Pool outside building 3 but can be used by anyone.

Room Tip: Ask for first floor or third floor for balcony or verandah in building one. Building two is suppose...

Overall, great trip! The grounds were beautiful and very well kept. The buffet food was so-so...some nights/days were better than others. They served alot of local foods. If you are american and used to the standard grub and salad bars on vacation - you won't get it here. We never went hungry and always had everything we needed but our friends were not impressed. Go into it not expecting much and remember you're in another country and you won't be disappointed. The cut FRUIT was always amazing!! SO FRESH!! The theme dinner nights are a must. The mexican night meal was definitely the BEST!! You have to reserve in advance and are only alotted so many but we got lucky and made it to all 3 of them with the help of meeting other couples who were Hilton Honors Diamond members. They gave us their passes because they weren't going to use them. Those dinners were far better than the buffet dinners.

The pool by building 3 is where you want to be if you want to avoid the families and crowds...there is a swimup bar and the bartenders were great! The main pool over by the restaurant and building 2 is for families. There was a guy over the loud speaker speaking spanish from early in the morning until sunset it seemed. They were always doing water sports and activities.

The hotel definitely catered to local guests which was nice for us because we got to see more of their local culture. Try to see some of the shows when you are there!! They were alot of fun! They speak spanish and english so everyone can understand. A couple of nights, we got pulled up on stage...my husband and I even won a contest one night where we had to compete against 3 other couples! It was a blast! We won a bottle of wine and hotel t-shirts!

The beach was ok...hotel sits in a cove so the water has alot of merky seaweed --- we stayed at the pool everyday...had a beautiful view of the beach! We preferred being able to jump in the pool when we wanted and grab a drink from the swim-up bar.

Room Tip: We went in Febrauary 2012 (I know a bit late doing my review :-) )...but we stayed in building 3 whi...

We booked our trip thru Travelocity and were very disappointed in the rooms. We were to have oceanfront rooms, one was a garden view and the other an alley view. Unable to see even a speck of blue from the ocean. These rooms were in desperate need of repairs, very musty smelling and toilet issues. I saw water running out into the hall from a room. Beautifull grounds, lots of pools, and Great (buffet) food every night, and friendly staff. Beware of the very hot black sand beach during the day w/o shoes (blistered feet). The on staff paramedics are extremely helpful. Morning or late afternoon walks are fine on the beach.

Room Tip: Select a room in building 3 (deluxe rooms):farthest from main part of resort:front desk, food, and bar...
