“Another amazing return to beautiful tranquil YabYum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2014

We returned to YabYum this year and loved it. We stayed in a beachside honeypod with a seaview for breakfast. Huts are clean and atmospheric and set in the most amazing lush gardens, all very well maintained. Great fresh food. A very peaceful and tranquil spot, Lulled to sleep by the sound of the sea. The beach is fabulous and there is an excellent french restaurant a short walk on the sand away, very romantic to walk there in the moonlight. Each hut has its own lovely seating area and hammock. This place refreshes the soul. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: The honeypods have the views but if you prefer things a little quieter ask for a hut away from the s...

AMAZING huts set in lush landscaped gardens. We stayed in the family pod in December 2013. Really enjoyed our time in Mandrem and at Yab Yum resort.
The breakfast option is something i haven't come across before. You get a menu delivered to your door the night before, you tick boxes for the relevant items you want (i usually had a masala omlette with toast, fresh juice and a pot of tea) select the time you want it and the next morning it's delivered to your door, amazing service, not once was it late. Not that it would've mattered anyway.
The resort is right on the beach so noise from the sea is to be expected but it's something i love to hear during the night. The beach is quite large up in Mandrem with the sea seeming to go out quite a long way. A stroll along the beach at dusk uncovers a whole load of sea creatures in the sand. Crabs, starfish by the ton, shellfish etc etc it was lovely.
Overall a great place to stay.

Room Tip: The family pod was amazing.

If, what you’re looking for are polished marble floors, fluffy bath towels and slick service, Yab Yum isn’t for you. If, however, you want to find a little gem of a hotel, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, on a beautiful, peaceful stretch of powder sand, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Yab Yum.

It’s set in the north of Goa where you can walk for miles in either direction, both eventually getting a little touristy.

As we wanted a little privacy, we booked the Suite Pod – a two bedroomed, one bathroom pod. This and the two Honey Pods are on the sand dune above the beach with just some greenery between you and the beach.. Other pods were dotted around the incredible lush gardens, each with their own seating area, some more private than others. With the noise of the breaking waves, the breeze entering the room through the billowing curtains, the new mosquito nets giving you peace of mind, we slept incredibly well every night.

Breakfast is ordered every evening and delivered to your pod at a requested time. It wasn’t the most inspiring meal, but delightful to be able to just leave your room without having to get showered and dressed and move to a restaurant for your first refreshment of the day. It was a nice touch.

Hours were spent on the beach with either books or our Kindles although where the other Yab Yum guests were, I don’t know as the loungers were never fully occupied.

There are “hawkers” on the beach and they do shelter behind the greenery when the local police walk along the beach which appeared to happen increasingly as our 10 day stay lengthened. The boys are selling beads and a polite shake of the head with a smile was enough to move them on. The girls were a little more pushy and were offering massages, manicures and selling sarongs. Most days, they were happy just to sit by your bed and ask how you were. If you didn’t want to buy what they were selling, they accepted that and understood. It was never a problem and actually it was rather nice to ask about their lives.

Above the beach are some trees and there was a nest of white bellied sea eagles. They must have had eggs as it was fascinating to watch the brown kites swooping down attacking the nest with the eagles fighting them off. We also saw a lone dolphin one lunchtime dancing slowly through the waves but as much as we willed it to reappear, sadly we only saw the one.

Food at Yab Yum was fabulous. The masala dosa was good enough to compete with any I’ve had at an Oberoi, Leela or Kempinski hotel in India. Definitely worth trying if you haven’t before. Dinner is marketed as a thali. I don’t really know what this is (I’m sure someone will explain), but it was a selection of vegetables with rice and bread followed by dessert. To this, you could add a recommended meat dish and we then chose another meat dish from the menu (plenty of other food available on the menu but the website seems to talk only about a daily thali). This was more than adequate for two people. The quality of the lunch and dinner food was incredible. So good, in fact, that my husband and I decided that Yab Yum should be renamed to Yab Yum Yum – or even drop the Yab!!

Yabyum is a great retreat from the world. Right on the beach; excellent locally sourced food; and away from the commercial development of other beaches. The huts are perfect for families with kids who like to be with their parents. Ashvem is the nicest, quietest beech of this northern stretch with enough great food options and some nice boutiques, but not too many people.

Room Tip: If you have kids... then they will love the family huts: a good sized double bed + two singles with...

The resort is absolutly beautiful with direct beach access. The beach itself is clean, long and wide. You can walk for miles. There are many nice restaurants on the beach, outside of Yab Yum which offer great dishes. Small "supermarkets" are in walkable distance, maybe five minutes along the road. We really enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: The domes are very, very beautiful.

I loved everything about this place, from the hobbit huts, the nightly frogs in the bathroom, the food (the thali, which changes each day, is excellent) and the amazing massages!

The standard pods were booked up, so we (a couple) stayed in a family pod. It was a great size and done out beautifully. Breakfast was delivered each morning outside the pod, which was lovely (and romantic) start to the day.

The staff were helpful in organising taxis and scooters to help us explore Goa. The waiters in the restaurant by the beach were very sweet and friendly and mixed a mean cocktail!

If only there were two hammocks for each pod... They were sooooo comfy but we could have done with one each!

We stayed here for 5 nights at the beginning of December (3 in standard dome, 2 in Honeypod2). The photographs on the website don't do the grounds justice! It is so green and tropical, it really does feel like paradise. The food is excellent. The staff were good but I think do struggle with understanding English. We went on various restaurant recommendations from the hotel, La Plage, Sublime and Thalassa all were fantastic and well worth a visit.

We spent 3 great nights in a standard dome which was really large. Each night we were visited by a frog (usually found in the loo, which we found very amusing!). We moved for our last two nights to Honeypod 2 which was in a lovely location overlooking the beach however we had two sleepless nights because of rodents running around in the ceiling of the honeypod. We were reassured by our neighbours after the first night that the rodents would not come into the pod but nevertheless it was a little unnerving. I would highly recommend to guests booking the honeypods to take earplugs with them as apparently it happens every night (again neighbours and other reviews which I wish I’d read before). We did not have this problem in the standard dome as I think being sheltered underneath the palm trees (with falling coconuts) makes these domes less desirable to rodents.
There are some local hawkers; some ladies who seem to have a connection with one of the male members of staff are often hanging around the sunbeds on the beach. If this is a problem for you then I would pretend to not speak English and they will hopefully leave you alone…unfortunately it was too late for us and we got quite a lot of attention from them each day which became a little testing!

Also be advised if you are taking the hotels taxi service back to the airport to have the correct amount of money, as our driver didn’t have change…something very minor but obviously he knew the fair and should have had the correct change to give us!
All in all we had a great time.

Hi, thanks for the great review! Some good points are raised:

Just to clarify - the little feet that scuttle across the tops of the honey pods definitely belong to little squirrels - technically we think that is a 'rodent', but definitely the more friendly type!! We have a cat which does its bit in keeping them away but they can get a bit frisky from time to time.

The point about English is a good one - most visitors don't realise that English is the 3rd language for many Goans, our staff included, so it's worth double-checking that any complicated requests have been fully understood - no different to staying in any other foreign country really.

Lastly, the hawkers on the beach are very limited in Ashwem compared to other parts of Goa, we definitely have no connection with them. The besy way to avoid anybody trying to sell you something in India is a shake of the head, or a simple no, and then look away - anything else tends to be taken as an invitation to talk!
