“FOR A HOME FROM HOME STAY AT LA FOSSE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013

I have just returned from staying at La Fosse with my wife and 3 year old Daughter. Originally our daughter was staying with relatives but at the last moment plans changed. I rang La Fosse and spoke to one of the owners Emmanuelle and asked if it would be possible to now include our daughter in our stay. Emmanuelle was assuring and friendly and told me that she has a 3 year old daughter herself and that it would be no problem to pop a cot bed into our room and she looked forward to welcoming us to the hotel. When we arrived at the hotel we were met by Mark, Emmanuelle's husband who welcomed us to his home/hotel and showed us to our room. The room was large and airy with an en suite bath and loo, flat screen TV/DVD,(there is a dvd library just outside the bedroom door all free). The bed was huge and super soft and the drinks tray consisted of real freshly ground coffee and Carafe, Hot Chocolate, around 6 different teas and a nice teapot. Mark is a highly trained chef and his wife is equally well trained in front of house and restaurant. We were eating in the restaurant with friends that evening who had arrived just before we came down. Emmanuelle had settled them in the lounge in front of a blazing fire and when we joined them she produced the evenings menus for us to pick from. Shortly after taking our choices to Mark the chef she returned to escort us to the dining room.

The dining room is quaint with a roaring fire at the top end where there are settees. Everything on the menu is imaginative and freshly cooked with real local ingredients, no frozen rubbish here. The adults were spoiled for choice and we enjoyed every course. Emmanuelle selected a lovely half bottle of white wine for me at just £9.99. Our 3 year old was looked after with some lovely mashed potato which Mark piped onto the plate in a design and we added some pieces from our plate for her. Look at some of the other comments about Watercress Ice Cream and other items, all delicious and unique. We expected to have one of us to leave the table to take our daughter to bed but she was loving the evening so we all moved to the settee area to enjoy Mark's award winning local Cheese board. Not a board but a slate holding 10 different LOCAL cheeses to enjoy, spiced pear slices, apple and vegetable crudities, selection of cheese biscuits and butter and home made chutney. The cheeses are laid out in order from the mildest to the strongest and Mark explained where they were all from. We finished with a glass of port and our friends left and we went up to bed. Morning came and we popped down for breakfast. There was a lovely selection of cereals and bread, marmalade etc and mark arrived to take our order. Everything on the menu is again locally made and mostly organic. Again, as at dinner, Mark went out of his way to ensure that our 3 year old was catered for and the whole breakfast was extremely tasty and sent us off in good spirits. Mark and Emmanuelle did not charge us anything for our 3 year olds late addition to our booking. We would certainly recommend La Fosse and it's caring owners to anyone looking for a stay or meal at an establishment that is run by 2 young people who's only wish is to ensure that you have a relaxing stay. We spoke to other guests who had been furnished with local walks info and other stuff and all agreed that they had been fortunate to choose La Fosse. If you are a nice person who wishes to experience a lovely hotel where the owners strive to look after you then La Fosse is for you. If you are someone that needs to find fault with everything when you stay away from home then choose a £300 a night hotel. La Fosse, Emmanuelle and Mark well done and keep on caring. We will certainly return soon.

Room Tip: Any room is lovely. We were in 'Dorset Blue'

Spent a wonderful night here with friends even though our original booking have been lost. Made to feel very welcome, lovely rooms. Dinner was amazing and I loved the unusual watercress ice cream for dessert. Finished with the lovely cheeseboard and a glass of port. Can't wait to go back again.

A welcome greeting on arriving. We were on a Travel Zoo offer so good value for money.

Our room was smaller than expected having read reviews about king size beds etc. Having booked 3 months ahead were we in last available room ? There was no coffee in the room or homemade biscuits as described. We arrived at 5pm so a biscuit would have been great. Wi fi was explained to us but no explanation in manual.(The page was missing) We did ask for coffee and code but we shouldnt have had to! No conditioner in bathroom so did not wash hair and the soap box looked old.

Bed lovely and comfortable.

Food was nice.Gave up waiting for coffee at the end of the evening. Is ice too much to ask for in a Gin and Tonic?

We did enjoy our night away and so a thank you to you both.

Perhaps I have been a fussy on this review but these little things could so easily be improved on.

Mark and Emmanuelle make your stay feel just like 'home from home', with the added bonus of five star dining! Provenance is show for all the dishes served, with the closest being, just across the road. The Gold Hill room was tastefully decorated and the bed very comfortable. Truly a very enjoyable stay.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable stay at La Fosse, we were greeted by Mark on arrival who showed us to our beautiful room. The room was very spacious with lots of very thoughtful touches, full of character. Our evening meal was exceptional using all local produce where possible, washed down with a bottle of wine ( which my husband really got the taste for) selected from the wine list. We then finished off with the cheese platter and port. Mark explained how each cheese was made and where it came from. Morning breakfast was just as lovely with a wide choice of cereal, toast, fresh fruit and juice and of course full English. Thank you mark for a memorable stay.

I visited twice during one UK visit and each visit found Mark and Emmanuelle so friendly and eager to help me with ideas for my stay. I was grateful for their local knowledge but also not only found the food they served divine but I very much valued their commitment to local produce. Still talking about the cheese platter that had 7 out of 10 cheese uk pasteurised - unheard of in Oz.
