“What a Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

This is a must-see! There are five Mayan-style huts which present the importance of cacao to the Mayan people. Along the path are plaques describing the indigenous plants. Then we were privileged to watch a Mayan ceremony. Afterwards, we enjoyed a presentation of how cocoa is made. Even the bathrooms are gorgeous. We thoroughly enjoyed this museum.

“Interesting little museum”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

A little further away but make it a day trip and visit Sotuta de Peon or another nearby hacienda. Make sure to see the demo and taste the chocolate drink :-)

“Amazing day trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

The ruta Puuc is an amazing day trip, but what is even more amazing than the mayan ruins of Uxmal is the Museo del Cacao! The day we went was overcast which was nice because you do walk a bit, the way the explain how the mayans used the Cacao in so many different formats was great, the best part was the lady who roasted the beans and let us try them fresh, the only thing I wish they had was a place to eat a traditional mayan meal this would be my only complaint.

“interesting but not very special unless you have kids”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

interesting explanation of how cacao is grown. quite touristy. if you have kids, they will enjoy the demonstration. we (adults) enjoyed it too, but that's because we were the only 2 in the audience (the place wasn't crowded) so we got to taste the cacao in various stages of manufacture

not worth the drive from merida, but it was a nice break between ruins on the Ruta Puuc.

“Excellent Aspect of Traditional Mayan Culture”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2012

We visited the Cocoa Eco-Museum which is located about 20 minutes from Uxmal, between the small Labna and Xlapak archaeological sites. The rooms of the museum takes you through the history of the Cocoa Bean, its sacred link to the Maya culture, how it is grown and how chocolate is made from the Cocoa beans, the local Flora and Fauna and after you have visited the entire place we were shown how hot chocolate is made and treated to a small cup of it. One other interesting part of the visit was, that they had on display some original pieces of Pre-Hispanic Mayan relics.
