What a shame, lovely Old pub set in lovely countryside - inside the bars are gorgeous but it ends there!
We booked a 2 night stay after buying a GoGroupie Voucher. We chose the 2 night B&B stay as opposed to the one night stay with dinner. What a mistake, we ended up leaving after 1 night and also paying for a dinner on that night, clearly we bought the wrong deal!!!
We arrived early afternoon to staff who did not seem to expect us and just showed us to our room which without any real information given. We did not really feel very welcome and although we asked for drinks and were served them there was little effort to respond to our attempts at conversation before the member of staff returned to her book! We were the only customers I might add!
The stairs were a first indication of poor standards as the carpet was badly marked and not vacuumed. The room we were given was poor, the shower had very dirty grouting and a good deal of lime scale, the toilet had even more lime scale which was quite discoloured. The bedding was not ironed and seemingly quite old, looked as if it came out of a charity shop! There was a toenail on the bed which made me quite concerned that bedding had not been changed since the last occupants. The bed sloped out at the edges and we were quite uncomfortable. The TV signal was poor and the room had no easy seating, although we did notice another room seemed to have comfy looking sofas etc
We booked a table for dinner on the first night and were disappointed to be put in a side area with no other people, due to a quiz night starting later on, which actually we would have liked to join in on but felt we were being set aside, the feeling was almost as if we were tolerated as guests but not really wanted. The food was fine but not brilliant and a bit overpriced, we both chose the pie (clearly made with left over roast beef) which was £9.95 each. For dessert, the custard with the spotted dick was clearly home made and very nice but spotted dick was on the heavy side.
There did not seem to be system in place for breakfast, we came down to no area set up. there was no cereals or juices laid out and no menu, we felt a bit uncomfortable as no instructions were offered. We sat down randomly choosing a table and were asked what we wanted for breakfast. It was a strange feeling as if breakfast for us was an after thought, we were expected but the guy did not quite know what to do about us. With lack of menu available were had to ask what was available and were told that they normally do a full English breakfast, so that's what we ordered. The breakfast was sort of ok, but that's all. The bacon was a little bit salty and egg was slightly overcooked, 1 slice of cold toast on side, the sausage tasted fine but was cut through and opened up obviously to see if it was cooked properly.
We were shown out after breakfast and the door promptly locked behind us as if to say do not come back until later! We took a drive to nearby Oxted to get petrol for our car and on the way there decided to go back, pack and go home. Lots of little things prompted our decision but it mainly came down to the lack of cleanliness in the room accommodation, and this made us concerned about the areas we could not see. Once you start to speculate about these things, we feel it is time to leave.
We have emailed our concerns to the manager 5 days ago and have not even had an acknowledgement back from him, so I guess they are not really bothered about our opinion. I really hope the management do decide to listen to reviews and do something about these things. It is a lovely pub and could be such a special place to visit with just a little effort.
Room 1 is small, with dirty ensuite. Room 2 and 3 has shared bathroom but seem bigger and have sofa...
