Recently renovated with Spanish aid and opened by the Spanish Queen. This fort was built as a response to the attack and sacking of Cidade Velho by Francis Drake in 1585. the views from the top are dramatic - especially over the Ribeira Grande valley and town. There is a small museum and visitor centre within the fort.
It is possible to walk down from the fort into the town. But the inhabitants of Cidade Velha appear to use the lower portions of this walk as a dumping ground and open toilet - so if you are squimish I don't recommend it.
