“Great scenery, but not worth the price and underwhelming”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013

As other reviewers have stated, there isn't much "kayaking" on this trip. We sat 3-4 per duckie and only the first and last person had short paddles to push off the walls of the ditch with. It's a slow float down the ditch with a few little pick ups (I can't classify them as rapids). More than half of the ditch is through dark tunnels. As another reviewer stated, there was no "ATV rides through Kohala's macadamia nut orchards" as advertised. We took the same vehicle there and back which did pass by the orchards on the way back. The snacks offered after we got off the ditch were small, handsized bags of sea salted macademia nuts and bottled water or juice. This was skimpy compared to other tours we took on the Big Island.

I don't think this was worth the price, but the staff and our guide "Hula" was very friendly and informative as she's a local to the area. I wouldn't do this tour again, but maybe try one of this company's ATV trips as it is in a very beautiful, tropical part of the island.

“Beautiful scenery but the rest was much like a water ride for children”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2013

The Kohala Ditch Adventure was not an adventure. The "ditch" has very good history how the Japanese built the underground water irrigation system but the adventure stops there. The advertisement reads "kayaking, ATV's, and a number of stunning views". The "Kayaking" was not in need of steering as it floats down the tube with out any paddling or real effort from the "guests", scenery was very good as is the Island it's self, there was no "ATV rides through Kohala's macadamia nut orchards" as advertised. We booked on line and paid $ 145.00 each, if we would have booked direct by telephone it was considerably less. Certainly not worth the price of admission, but the guides were entertaining and fun, they saved the day.

“Don't miss it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

Had a great float down da ditch (an irrigation ditch originally built to support sugar cane plantations) through some beautiful countryside. Our guide was friendly, fun and very knowledgeable about the ditch and surrounding area, Hawaiian history, native plants and foods. She got everyone involved laughing and asking questions.

We had 4 people in our inflatable kayak, the front and rear riders get paddles which are used to push the kayaks away from the walls. The current makes paddling unnecessary. Your bum will definitely get wet so don't forget to bring towels and a dry pair of shorts (shirt also if your group likes to splash.)

Would definitely repeat on my next trip to the big island!

“Flumin' da ditch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

This may be a little-known attraction on the BIg Island. We wanted to do this in 2008, however it was closed due to earthquake damage from 2006. It's operated by Kohala Ditch Adventures. It's not for those who may have back, neck, or hip issues. We loved it! Floating slowly down the 100-year old irrigation ditch; ducking while going through tunnels; enjoying our guide, Sean, while he speaks of the history of the area. There are many low-hanging supports that entail ducking. You are transported up 1000' elevation by a vehicle that is very bumpy, but the scenery is awesome. Everyone at Kohala Ditch Adventures is awesome. If you take this adventure, be sure to drive back South on 250 through Parker Ranch and some of the most beautiful green landscape; you'll go through Waimea, too. You reach 4000' elevation. It is magnificent. http://www.kohaladitchadventures.com/

“Da Ditch”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

Five stars because it is family friendly. Not high adventure but something the entire family can do together from very young to somewhat sedentary. To get the most out of the excursion engage the guide(s) in conversation. They are happy to talk story especially about the interesting history of the Big Island. If you are looking for running rapids and Eskimo rolls of your canoe: this is not the trip for you. Here's some pictures and video I took in early February 2013 via a YouTube link.
