“A quiet escape to the North Kohala Coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

I booked this trip through Living Social. The retreat sounded like just what we wanted--to get away from it all in a beautiful, quiet setting. Hawaii Island Retreat certainly accomplished that goal! It's only 9 rooms (and a yurt village). We just so happened to be only one of four rooms occupied so we pretty much had the place to ourselves. It was a beautiful setting and the rooms are really nice. I was a little worried that there were no TV's in the room but they do have a nice one in their media room--that we never even turned on! Their infiintiy pool was so tranquil!
We ziplined and ATV'd while staying there so coming back to such a nice, quiet setting was beautiful.
Our breakfast was included with our living social deal and I wasn't expecting much but a continental breakfast but wow! I still think the breakfast is what I am going to miss the most! Our chef/breakfast artist Rebecca was wonderful! Each morning we had a plateful of fruit--all grown right there on property! Mango, papaya, lychees, oranges, gooseberries, cherries, and apple bananas. The property has their own hen farm and a lot of goats. We had goat cheese, goat yogurt, goat butter and more goat cheese! We had fresh eggs, frittata, and gluten free pancakes which I am still in wonder that I really liked them so much!
I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Only 9 rooms in the main building. Ours was facing the ocean, the Violet room. Very nice.

Mahalo -Thank you for your terrific review. I will most certainly pass to Rebecca your comments. She is a wonderful chef. It really pleases us that you had such a nice time. North Kohala is absolutely beautiful and there is so much to do and see, yet at the same time you can get away from it all if you want to.

My compliments to the chef. The location is incredible. The spa service is wonderful. The yoga trainer is top notch. The view is unparalleled but the food is wonderful and one of the main atractions. We stayed in the penthouse and were spoiled by the very personal sevlice. Also, the infinity pool and hot tub are a great addition.

This was the most magical and spiritual place for my god-child's wedding. We were welcomed by the owners, Jeanne and Robert, with Aloha right from the start. Our room's decor, "the red room", was the perfect blend of warmth and class with a spectacular view of the wild Kohala Coast. As we all gathered from different ends of the globe, we immediately felt at home. The attention to details on the grounds and spectacular plantings was obvious at every turn with beautiful, surprising little areas with which to explore and find a peaceful connect. The staff was amazing, helpful and available always. I can't say enough about the food. Organic greens and sumptuous meals created by Mo never disappointed. I came away with a joy for the union as well as a feeling of inner peace with my spirit soothed. Don't miss this experience!! You will know what ALOHA truly means. Mahalo me ke hugs, Sheila (Kaila) M Webster

We had our wedding at the Hawaii Island Retreat this past March and it was absolutely amazing. We wanted our guests to say onsite for several days and wanted the privacy of our own resort. HIR offered that and much more. Things we loved:
- private, cliff side location
- beautiful, luxurious rooms that felt very authentic
- amazing grounds with exotic flowers and gardens
- access to hiking trails
- wonderful solar heated pool and hot tub
- shampoo, shower gel and conditioner were some of the best we've experienced (even vs. Four Seasons, St Regis, etc)

Jeanne, the owner is one of a kind. She is so kind and started HIR as a palace for healing and spiritual awakening.

Our guests loved staying onsite and having the entire venue to ourselves. The chefs did a great job of cooking healthy breakfasts. The retreat even arranged for an awesome yoga teacher for morning yoga.

If you're looking for a one of a kind, private wedding venue - or just truly relax on big island, this place is highly recommended.

Last month we held our wedding at Hawaii Island Retreat and it was absolutely perfect! This is the ideal wedding venue on the Big Island. The property itself is breathtaking. Kapa'au is one of the most beautiful places on the Big Island and the Retreat's magnificence parallels so nicely with its natural surroundings.
The sanctuary offers beautiful backgrounds and scenery, perfect for photos. You get great photos without even trying!
The history of the land and the philosophy of the off-grid, green retreat make it a very special and unique place, perfect for a dream wedding.
The staff was so kind, accommodating and helpful- they made our wedding weekend run smoothly and beautifully. They know what they're doing!
We are so grateful for the entire staff of HIR who took such great care of us and made sure our wedding and weekend was amazing. They made what could have been a time of worry and stress into a seamless, serene weekend celebration.
The food was spectacular! The chef, Mo, created delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Everything was so fresh and grown right there on property! The greens and veggies from their fabulous garden; the eggs freshly gathered from their chickens; and milk, cheese and ice cream from Jeanne's goats that also reside at the retreat.
Hawaii Island Retreat is perfect for an intimate wedding, we had 120 people-it worked nicely. The ceremony took place on the cliffs overlooking the ocean and the reception was up at the main lodge- it was great having the ceremony, reception and lodging all on one property, so close-no traveling from one event to the next.
Our family stayed in the spacious and elegant main lodge rooms and our wedding party stayed in 'yurt village'- it was perfect. The honeymoon suite is fabulous! Perfectly romantic with your own balcony! Having our family and wedding party there all weekend was fantastic; we really got to spend quality fun time with those we love.
We had such a magnificent weekend, family and friends enjoyed all the fun- salt water pool, jacuzzi, exercise rooms, checking out the gardens, goats and chickens.
This romantic wedding venue is a hidden gem on the Big Island. Once you arrive you'll forget about the real world, whether it be for a family or an independent stay or for your dream wedding, Hawaii Island Retreat is a fantastic getaway. A huge thank you to HIR and all its beautiful staff.
I feel blessed to have said 'I do' at Hawaii Island Retreat.

Room Tip: I love the blue room, spacious with a nice closet

Green Features: It is so fabulous to see off-grid resorts working, their environmental consciousness is seen in every aspect of HIR. From solar grids to their bee hives, they get an A+ for environmental friendliness.

I stayed at the retreat for a spiritual workshop. It is the perfect venue for that. The grounds are beautiful and completely green. This is a special place and the grounds have lots of history and energy. The organic meals were fantastic, and even better that the fruits and veggies were mostly grown on the property. You can lose yourself hiking around the vastness of the grounds.

This is not the place for partying, drinking, and sitting at the beach. In fact, you can't swim at the beach here (but you can in the salt water pool). If you want the party scene, you are better off somewhere else.

Room Tip: The yurts are great to get totally into the experience of being one with the land

Green Features: Completely off grid! Everything from the windmill to the solar heaters and on-site grown food was fantastic.

Our wedding and family visit was truly amazing. The rooms are so comfortable as is the entire retreat. We felt the true aloha experience. Whether walking the grounds, swimming in the pool or just sitting around talking with family, the peaceful environment made our trip truly memorable.

Room Tip: The room we had was a very large corner room, it felt like a little haven from the world.

Green Features: I learned a lot about the gardening practices and brought some of those ideas home with me. i loved the fact that the beds were quite happy with weeds mixed in with the vegetables. The fact that the retreat is off the grid was very appealing.

Thank you for your review. We do work very hard at trying to include as much organically grown produce as possible from our gardens into our meals. But most important, we are so very happy that you were able to enjoy the wedding among so many family members and friends.
