“A place to re-connect to what is truly important”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

I was fortunate to spend 2 weeks at Hawaii Island Retreat, and my experience was absolutely spiritual and transformative! Upon arrival, I immediately felt a sense of 'ohana. The staff is extremely personable and dedicated, the food is heavenly, and the grounds provide a space to re-connect with nature and spirit. I come away a new woman, wife, mother, daughter, student and healthcare professional!

Room Tip: The rooms in the lodge are spacious, beautiful and relaxing!

If you are looking for "Hawaiian Vacation" with Piña Colada and white sand beach ( with lots of tourists and cute life guards) maybe you should look for Waikoloa are or even other islands. But if you are someone like me, having too much inputs from everyday environment and looking for away from them on vacation in Hawaiian spirits, this place can be one for you.

Short drive from lovely small town Hawi, they are there. I mean, of course, the warm hosts and spacious beautiful air breezing room with comfortable bed, but not only those, they are there. Birds, bees, trees, flowers, winds and energy from Pacific Ocean...etc. Natures don't entertain me. Just being there, and kindly let me be among them too. First few days, I didn't realize what it was. But later, when I started feeling being myself and just sat there, then realize how gently all those natures were there, always accompanied with me, and felt so comfortable.

If you camp, you need to worry about other things. Or if you being alone in big town, you need to care about security too. This property is perfect place to harmonize with nature without worries. If you need help, people there are warmly welcoming you. Plus I took Yoga class every morning with Jamie, wonderful Yoga teacher. Her class helped me a lot to release my stubborn mind. And of course, they would arrange spa treatment to relax your body too.

I can see now why the rating for this place is whether 5 or 1. You need to know what you want before choose to visit Hawi town itself. To me, I would say this is not just a hotel, is more like going back to parents home. After all we are all children of Mother Nature and Father Heaven, maybe what I felt was it.

The Hawaii Island Retreat showcases the superb taste, loving care, talent, and stewardship of the environment of its owners. The landscaping and the retreat's site by the ocean are gorgeous and relaxing. We stayed in a yurt for four days and then decided to stay longer, moving to one of the rooms for another two days. Two different experiences, both of which we enjoyed. Loved the delicious breakfasts, the infinity pool, the hiking paths, the small number of rooms, and the sense of spaciousness and peace. Highly recommended both for those who already care about the environment and for those who are open-minded and want to learn more.

We were lucky enough to spend one night at the Hawaii Island Retreat. It's a beautiful, secluded property. Rooms are very large. Plenty of shared sitting spaces on two levels. It sits above a cliff overlooking the ocean which affords wonderful views. There is also a nice hiking trail around the property. Infiniti pool is also lovely. The location also provides for great sleeping due to the combination of winds and waves. The only area for improvement is the dinners -- I'm not a big fan of buffets and there were only limited choices. Very tasty, but limited. Also, no on-site bar to have a cocktail.

This environmentally-conscious resort is very special indeed. We chose to stay in one of the yurts -- but I looked at the rooms in the main lodge and they were wonderful too. The yurt was more luxurious than the name implies and it allowed us to use all the resort's facilities without the cost of the regular room. This is a big advantage when budgets are a consideration! The pool area was peaceful and lovely to use. The gardens and plantings were very artful. There are 3 large rooms that can be used for yoga or other group gatherings -- there were no groups there when we were so we had the entire place almost to ourselves. It was SO quiet, peaceful, and green in the best ways. The owners have created a work of art, everywhere you look. We only live about 50 miles from this resort and plan to return several times a year.

Room Tip: Any lodge room would be wonderful. The yurts have their limitations -- it wouldn't be good if th...

This review is long overdue. It's amazing how time flies when you get back to reality....sigh. My wife and I stayed at the retreat for 3 days in March and can't wait to go back to spend more time at this special place.

The place is absolutely gorgeous with not only the beautiful setting but the way they use their resources, being self-sustainable. Their commitment and practice of eco-friendliess have to be commended. As a scientist, I very much appreciated how much work went into making all the different elements work. And yet, we never felt that it lacked anything unlike a lot of other eco-friendly hotels.

The owners, Jeanne and Dr. Robert (who deserve a special thank you from us) and the staff truly made our stay so comfortable and relaxing. We had this feeling that there's always someone looking after us (in a good way) but never in an intrusive manner. The spa was beautiful, and the yoga studio was one of a kind. Moe's daily breakfast was truly incredible and got us ready for exploring this quiet and beautiful part of the island. It was such a rejuvenating trip.

One thing to note is that since this resort is isolated and near a quiet residential area, local establishments close early or close entirely for family events. So extra care needs to be taken into account to plan for meals. There's always an option to have dinner prepared at the retreat, which is a great option, but if you'd like to venture outside for dinner, you may need to drive quite a bit farther.

Room Tip: can't go wrong with any room here.

Green Features: It's absolutely amazing that this hotel is self-sufficient when it comes to energy, food, recycling, etc....absolutely amazing. It's a great model for others to follow.
