“Relaxing luxury”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

We only booked the Pheasant a few days before our trip, never having been there before. The hotel/inn is extremely comfortable, great open fires, comfy lounges, and excellent food (both bistro and restaurant). The staff were excellent, very helpful and informative, especially Nicki, the manager. Use of local spa facilities, after a very hard walk up Skiddaw in the snow, was very welcome!

If the weather is fine sit out in the garden and have a drink before going in for a meal. The food is well cooked with local specials. Go for the lamb. The whole hotel has a special feel to it and the staff are polite and helpful without being obsequious. There is a small Iron Age fort across the lane, a nature walk nearby and then you can drive into Keswick and pay a visit to an excellent supermarket called Booths which is very much like Waitrose and has a good car-park. Incidentally, for those who like to browse second hand books etc. there is an excellent charity shop across the road from Booths which has some surprisingly good stuff .

We spent a walking weekend in the Lakes and stayed at The Pheasant Inn. It was just what was needed at the end of a days walking. Warm welcome, comfy lounges with blazing log fires, friendly staff, wonderful food, excellent accomodation.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Garden room which was outside, It was a very comfortable, large room with plenty o...

We booked a one night stay at the last minute, arrived at lunch time to a warm welcome from the staff and could check in straight away as our room had not been used the night before. Took a stroll down the road and on a short nature trail where we saw woodpeckers, nut hatch, and lots of other birds on the feeders hung in the trees along the duckboard walkway. Very cold day so went back to the inn for coffee sat in one of the many small lounge areas in front of a roaring fire - bliss!! It is also possible to visit the spa at Nearby Armathwaite Hall free of charge. A meal in the bistro in the evening was superb with an excellent menu choice. Breakfast was also excellent with lots of fruit including muesli and extra dried fruit and a good choice of cooked breakfast including very tasty sausages, smoked salmon etc. Will definitely visit again in the future, excellent place for a short break - a short distance from Keswick if you want more going on but so quiet and peaceful tucked away at the top of Bassenthwaite. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Room Tip: All the rooms are cosy with lovely bathrooms.

Due to getting married at Gretna Green and staying in the Bassenthwaite area for the week, I needed a venue for a wedding reception.

The pheasant was above and beyond.

Due to living in the Yorkshire area most of the planning was done by email, only the odd phone call. The day before the wedding myself and two friends (we like to think we are afternoon tea, experts) attended to have afternoon tea, beautiful, it beat us.

I gave a box of random oddments (table decorations), on arrival Nicki had transformed the dining room, wow. Thank you Nicki.

Food was beautiful, there were the expected errors, family friends unable to remember their meal options, also the kitchen made a few errors, one being the wrong flavour soup however, these were rectified immediately, with no fuss, everybody happy.

Thank you, for a fantastic wedding reception, hopefully we will be coming to stay next year on our anniversary, and have an afternoon tea.

Beautiful food, excellent service.

My husband and I were very fortunate to receive a voucher as a wedding gift from friends for a romantic break at The Pheasant Inn. This lovely little gem is the essence of English hospitality. Each bedroom is uniquely furnished with a lot of thought and attention to provide a relaxing and luxurious break in its simplest form. The food is 'melt in the mouth' and full of wholesome goodness and I've never tasted such amazing sausages for breakfast (sourced locally ofcourse). Enjoy! :)

Planned a two night stay based on a special offer that was available at the time - included bed, breakfast and dinner in the Bistro to the value of £20 per person. Decided to stay another day because we enjoyed it so much on the same special rate. Good location for walks and visiting all areas of the Lakes. Quiet and very peaceful. Our room was spacious, very clean, very warm and comfortable and had a area to sit. The decor was in keeping with the quaint style of the Inn. The bathroom whilst very adequate was in need of a bit of updating and was too warm and did not have a window to open. Nice toiletries though. Nice little touches - home made shortbread on the drinks tray and a daily weather forecast and the option to have a packed lunch made up. We dined in the Bistro and whilst was not the best food we have ever had there was a good choice and it was perfectly adequate and very welcome after a day's walking. The service was prompt and the staff were very friendly and took time to chat. The cooked breakfast was very good and you could have whatever combination you wanted rather than being given things you may not have wanted or would be wasted. The cold selection was fairly standard. Overall a really enjoyable stay and would recommend if quaint, and relaxing is what you are looking for.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel because of the views. The rooms at the front overlook the pa...
