“Great staff- Lousy Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2007

This is a great resort if you have kids and want a place where you don't have to do anything. You can stay here and not have to leave, because there's 8 restaurants, two pools, a huge beach and an abundance of activities. I wouldn't go back though. We found the restaurants overpriced for what you got (a typical evening meal for two of us with a nice bottle of wine and including tip was in the US$200 range), and the service was somewhat spotty. We went to Aqualuna for our anniversary dinner, and while our waiter was great, we felt completely rushed through our meal when our main course showed up while we were still eating our appetizers. Our meal at Palio was good, but we were surrounded by families with tired cranky kids and when we asked to move were told there was no other table available. We didn't like the location of the resort all that much (although that is totally personal preference) because it was a long way from anywhere, and there was really no way to experience the island without paying a huge amount for taxi or taking one of the organized tours. We did book with the concierge for the Old San Juan tour and the El Yunque tour and thoroughly enjoyed both. There was lots of time for just doing your own thing, which we appreciated. We liked the actual resort for places to walk and run, and while we aren't golfers, we talked to a lot of people who said the golfing was great. Evenings were a bit quiet, and we found there wasn't a lot to do if you didn't want to sit and drink in the bar. The beach bar closed at 5:30 which was disappointing because there wasn't a lot happening outside in the evenings. The staff for the most part were friendly and helpful, and the internal shuttle was convenient. Another suggestion - if you're staying in a mountain view room, ask for one that isn't on top of the parking lot/entrance to the hotel. It wasn't that pleasant to sit out on our little deck and have to put up with the noise of cars and shuttle buses coming and going.

Just returned from a week with our 2 daughters, 7 & 2 yrs.old. Weather was great except the last 2 days (rain). The beach was great, very clean, perfect temp and the kids had so much fun with the gentle waves. you could walk out knee deep forever. beachs were not overcrowded, considering it was presidents week. The pool was fabulous! 31/2 feet almost all the way around with a great kids slide, my daughter went up/down at least 100 times. There is a very small toddler pool near by and a quiet pool too (no kids). the only thing missing was a swim-up bar and some american music as well as the local tunes they begin playing around 3pmish.
Our room was on the 2nd floor with ocean/pool view. it was great, at night yu could hear the ocean and the birds and on fri & sat u could see the poolside movies they had for the kids.
Food was OK! a bit disappointed by Palio but Aqua Luna was yum. our favorite was room service..haha.
The kids club was INCRDIBLE! my 7 yrold. met alot of new friends there and had alot of fun. They also have a night club $10 per.hr. and they did alot of fun stuff too. Very organized with plenty of staff and Safety was always first. We did hire a babysitter one night thru the hotel, her name was Ester and she was great.
We did get food poison from a place in old san juan called Mojitos..so DONT GO THERE! my daughter and I did the horseback riding tour, the horses were gentle and clean but the ride was very boring.
all in all the kids had a blast and e got to relax a bit.

Just came back from a 4 night stay and after reading reviews I was wary about this hotel. I guess if you pay $800 a night you would have reason to complain. Got a great deal on Hotwire so price for the hotel was not an issue. Rented a car, an absolute must. Got a great rate for the car on Hotwire which basically made the car rental the same price as the hotel shuttle roundtrip for two people. During our stay there were several corporate events going on and lots of people were in the lobby working away on laptops. This was great for us because the pool was always empty. Check in was very easy and the front desk staff couldn't have been nicer. We asked for an received an upgrade to an ocean front room with King bed, very nice. The room was great, clean, no bugs. The only complaint is the paper thin walls. Our neighbors set an alarm for 6 AM and it woke us up as well. The pool and beach were awesome, not very crowded and very clean. Pool bar was nice but got crowded in late afternoon. They do not take cash so you either pay by creditcard or sign to room. Drinks are outrageously expensive. $8.00 for a Corona and $9.00 for a Pina Colada. Only ate dinner at the hotel once, at the Grille Room. Very nice, great service and good food...not worth the $140 for two people. Having a car helped as we were able to leave and go off site for food. Anotojitos is on the road that leads to the Westin and is great. Inexpensive food, excellant service and cheap drinks. Could not believe we were the only people in there. La Parilla was good too. Had to wait over an hour for our food due to crowd but received drinks on the house from our server. Definately check out the BioBay tour. We used las Tortugas Adventures and they were great. A good place to eat there is Colizas, great seafood and steaks. The rain forest is nice, the entrance is near the hotel so if you have a car you can go by yourself. Casino at hotel got very crowded at night and could not even get to the tables. The cookie stand is a great place for breakfast. Watch out for taxes, everything, and I mean everything is taxed with a city tax and island tax, from parking to drinks. All in all a good place, if they cut down on the price of food and drinks it would be outstanding. as for weather, never saw a raincloud.

I Travel extensively throughout the Carribean, and i can recomend this property whole heartledly. The service was 5 star. First rate. You were welcomed by EVERY worker with a friendly greeting. We had issues with the room key and the front desk clerk, actually left her position at the front desk, and walked us to the room to assist in opening the door. now that is service! The pool area is beautiful. the beach, expansive, with soft sand. the rooms are the only rub..they are slightly worn..and of the generic variety..but who spends much time in the room anyway. Yes, food is expensive..breakfast buffet was $100 for 4..for breakfast!! so go to the davids cookies on property instead and get some bagels and muffins and lattes, bring them to the beach, and have a leisurely breakfast for a reasonable price, with your feet in the sand. tip: park in the employee lot across the street from the indoor lot , and get free parking. Overall, a most pleasant experience. try antonjiettes (spelling?) down the road for decent local food, in a friendly atmosphere, with very reasonable prices! and great mojitos! lastly, a rental car a must while staying at this property. enjoy.

After reading several mixed reviews, I was wary, but overall pleasantly surprised.

Rooms: Two double beds were tight for family of four. Would do a larger room next time. Pretty clean, though, and NO BEDBUGS!

Pool: Must go reserve chairs early (by 8am), only downside. Otherwise, great pool and beach area. Even when crowded, did not seem overly so.

Restaurants: Very expensive, food mediocre, and must reserve very early (before you arrive). Upside of not having to leave property. Great breakfast at Marbella. Palio and Club Coqui were the best meals by far. Shimas was inedible.

Excursions: Rain forest great - very important to wear proper footwear such as tevas or keens. The rocks were very slippery. Old San Juan trip a waste unless you're a shopper.

Hotel: Personnel were all extremely pleasant and accomodating. The hotel itself was beautiful. The casino, game room & gym were surprisingly small for such a massive place.

Would definitely go again!

We loved the Westin Rio Mar! It is a beautiful hotel with great service and a great variety of activities and eateries. We ate in 9 of the 11 restaurants and had delicious food, except for the Grill Room. My son especially enjoyed the poolside snack kiosk with cotton candy, sno cones, ice cream and popcorn.
Everyone was friendly and helpful. The concierge was very patient while I changed our plans several times. They were very helpful booking golf, and side trips to El Yunque, Catamaran snorkeling. The quality of these trips was excellent. The pools and beaches were delightful. My only regret is that we missed the trip to Bioluminescent Bay. But we plan on coming back !

My husband and I booked 4 nigths at the westin. We requested a ocean front-king room which t was confirmed when we made the reservation. When we got to the hotel we had to wait more than 30 min to check in, they gave us the wrong room, we requested to talk to the manager and he didnt get back to us. The room was filty, the floors were disgusting and the bathroom was full of rust. On top of that the "ocean front" view was blocked by a palm tree!! I get better service from holiday inn.
We decided to leave and go to the Mariott, what a difference, excellent customer service and the rooms were recently renovated.

Dont waste your money or time !!!
