“Great Family Vacation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2007

After reading several mixed reviews, I was wary, but overall pleasantly surprised.

Rooms: Two double beds were tight for family of four. Would do a larger room next time. Pretty clean, though, and NO BEDBUGS!

Pool: Must go reserve chairs early (by 8am), only downside. Otherwise, great pool and beach area. Even when crowded, did not seem overly so.

Restaurants: Very expensive, food mediocre, and must reserve very early (before you arrive). Upside of not having to leave property. Great breakfast at Marbella. Palio and Club Coqui were the best meals by far. Shimas was inedible.

Excursions: Rain forest great - very important to wear proper footwear such as tevas or keens. The rocks were very slippery. Old San Juan trip a waste unless you're a shopper.

Hotel: Personnel were all extremely pleasant and accomodating. The hotel itself was beautiful. The casino, game room & gym were surprisingly small for such a massive place.

Would definitely go again!

We loved the Westin Rio Mar! It is a beautiful hotel with great service and a great variety of activities and eateries. We ate in 9 of the 11 restaurants and had delicious food, except for the Grill Room. My son especially enjoyed the poolside snack kiosk with cotton candy, sno cones, ice cream and popcorn.
Everyone was friendly and helpful. The concierge was very patient while I changed our plans several times. They were very helpful booking golf, and side trips to El Yunque, Catamaran snorkeling. The quality of these trips was excellent. The pools and beaches were delightful. My only regret is that we missed the trip to Bioluminescent Bay. But we plan on coming back !

My husband and I booked 4 nigths at the westin. We requested a ocean front-king room which t was confirmed when we made the reservation. When we got to the hotel we had to wait more than 30 min to check in, they gave us the wrong room, we requested to talk to the manager and he didnt get back to us. The room was filty, the floors were disgusting and the bathroom was full of rust. On top of that the "ocean front" view was blocked by a palm tree!! I get better service from holiday inn.
We decided to leave and go to the Mariott, what a difference, excellent customer service and the rooms were recently renovated.

Dont waste your money or time !!!

The hotel, pool and beach were great for families. However, the service at the restaurants was horrible! We were lucky if our family of 4 were served our food together so that we could eat at the same time. And the food was expensive, so the service should have been better.

I read alot of mostly favorable, And some mixed reviews before my visit to the Rio Mar. Here is my take. The rio mar has 5 star, 4 star, and 3 star aspects. Here is my breakdown: ..... PLANE TRAVEL: 5 stars- Four hour direct flights from N.Y.area with many flight choices on many airlines, no connecting flights to smaller islands (which many on my plane missed because of the ny ice storm) my roundtrip was $240 ...... HOTEL LOCATION AND PROPERTY: 4.5 stars- A 30 min. car ride from the airport, set on beautiful grounds with 2 nice golf courses, lots of tennis courts, Grounds are nicely landscaped. HOTEL STRUCTURE- 4.5 stars- tasteful, rustic, lots of terra cotta&earthtones. Lobby is big, simple and beuatifull, not all white and marbleled like a four seasons, reminds me a larger version of the old Dorado Beach lobby ...... ROOMS- 3.5 stars. The rooms are a bit of an enigma to me. fairly small and rustic. BATHROOM was a bit tired looking, rust stains appearing around most fixtures, far from luxurious. BALCONY was great, held a table with 2 chairs. great for having breakfast. BED was awesome, slept better than @ home. MAID SERVICE was there by 10:30 am every morning. ........ POOL- 4 stars- One of the thing I hate most about Vacations is getting up @ 7 am to get a poolside chaise w/ umbrella. The rio mar is no different. get there early for a choice spot. pool is nice, w/ a 4 leaf clover shape, big hot tub, fairly lame water slide for a hotel like this, kids seemed to like it though. seperate adult pool was very nice and fairly quiet..... BEACH-4 Stars- no powdery white or pink sand in Puerto Rico,Just nice soft brownish sand. beach must be a mile long and 50 yards wide, lots of chaises. fairly big waves, lots of fun for adults and kids. Can get a bit rough depending on the wheather. need to comb the beach a little better! .... FOOD- 3 stars- Restaurants are very nice looking, good ambience. Prices are not unreasonable in my opinion(similar to new york restaurants). Food was mostly awfull. stick with fish or pasta. I don't know where they get their beef from, i doubt it's from cow. Even the burgers taste bad. Kids menu was actually good. everything was $6 on it. Aqua Luna had good Seafood, Palio was the best spot, pretty good Pasta. Ate at Shimas Twice(no other choice) it Was just plain bad. Went local twice, Richies(great views) and La Parilla(lots of bugs)both highly recommended from the staff. I found the food to be no better then the hotel food....... SERVICE: 5-Stars- Staff was very Accomodating, never rude. very cheerful. In my opinion 5 star staff abd service, prompt maid service a big plus...... THINGS TO DO:-5 -Stars- every hour they have different activities for those who don't like to sit. Hair braiding for kids, aqua robics, iguana feeding, kids bingo, P.M. bonfire w/ smores making, Poolside kids Movie at night. 2 golf courses, tennis, lots of excursions, they are pricey if you do through hotel(i rented a car(saved alot of money)..... OVERALL- Great family resort, not for a romantic getaway..... VALUE- While not cheap, I feel the hotel is priced right for what you get. P.S.-$70 resort fee is completely obnoxious, but i think most big resorts have this charge, it's a hoaxy charge, all the stuff you think is free is really not(complimentary room coffee, beach towels, shampoo, shuttle service, plus any thing else you think is complimentary is paid for for via the resort fee.) I Will be going back, overall great experience, but manage your expectations. Go for a family vacation, not for the food.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2007

We arrived at 4am and check in took about 20 minutes. First they did not have us arriving until the next day, until we had a paper copy of the confirmation. It seemed like a ploy. We planned the vacation as a romantic getaway weekend, and as such, reserved a king size bed with ocean view. After the long and slow check in process, we were sent to our room and surprised to see 2 double beds. We went back to the desk and were told there were no king size beds left, and we would have to wait until the morning. We went back to our room and realized the ocean view was really a view of the trees and pool with the ocean in the background, hardly an ocean view. The next morning we went to the front desk and were jerked around, told we were still on the waiting list. Later on that day found out that there were 20 % king bed rooms and 80% double. Also that there was no availability. Needless to say we spent the weekend in double beds. This was not a huge thing, but only the beginning of our experience at the Rio Del Mar.
The service in the Marbella Restaurant was awful. We went for breakfast and had to obtain our own menus because we were waiting so long. For lunch, it took 40 minutes for our order to arrive- they were waiting for the pizza to cook. Each day, a new miscellaneous charge appeared on our bill, whether we were double charged for lunch or charged for the mini bar which we did not use. The front desk was condescending if anything, unhelpful and unable to provide the service that most people expect. It was unacceptable. The food in the Grille Room could be compared to Outback Steakhouse but 3 times the cost.
The day BEFORE we were to check out, we received our bill under the door. We had to again go to the front desk who claimed we were checking out that day, but again, provided them with the paper confirmation to show that we were checking out the next day. Later that day, our room key did not work, because even though we had fixed the problem, they did not fix it in the system.
As far as the noise, you can hear the people above you moving things around, and if they are using the shower, you will know it. Don't use the shower at the same time as anyone else in the hotel, or you will lose pressure. Overall, the service was terrible, and we felt that we were being scammed each day.
I would NEVER return there. If I had to, I would lower my expectations of food or bring my own.

We recently spent 5 days at the Westin Rio Mar with our 3 young children. Everyone had a fantastic time - the resort is beautiful, the staff was wonderful and the weather was perfect. I was a bit concerned after reading some of the reviews, but all of our expectations were met or exceeded! We would definitely return to this resort for our next vacation.

Some specific points:
1) The staff throughout the hotel was wonderful, helpful and friendly. Frances and Shelly, the pool activity coordinators were super - my kids loved the hair braiding, iguana feeding, sand castle building and bingo.
2) Food is expensive at the resort restaurants - Davids Cookies is good for breakfast (bagels, muffins, coffee). We rented a car and checked out the local restaurants for dinner (Don Pepe's, La Parilla, Lolittas and Metropol were all very good). There are grocery stores within 10 minutes of the resort. Walmart is 15 minutes away.
3) Driving is very scary, especially during peak times, lots of traffic, motorcycles spliiting lanes, drivers not stopping at intersections, etc. Be very careful!!
4) The beach at the resort is beautiful - aqua blue water, soft brown sand, lots of sand dollars and shells. The waves are great for bodysurfing, but the undertow is strong (be careful with small children - there is no lifeguard at the beach)
5) Pools are clean, well maintained and the kids enjoyed the waterslide at the activity pool. Food and drink service is available at both pools (drinks are expensive). We had no issues with overcrowding at the pool although toward the end of our week, more people were coming into the resort (for Presidents weekend).

All in all it was a great week!
