My husband and I stayed at the Westin for 5 nights. We had a great time. We did not know what to expect after reading many mixed reviews about the resort, but the room was nice and clean. The staff was very friendly. We ate breakfast and lunch at Marbella. The food was okay, but service was shoddy. We also had dinner at Aqua Luna. The food was just warm not hot at all and the service was also shoddy. Luckily, we got great restaurant recommendations from Raquel, one of the concierges. We had great meals at Antojito's right before hitting Rt 3 from the resort, Mojitos in Old San Juan, Pikayo in the museum of PR, Lolita on Rt 3 towards Fajardo, and Pasion Por El Fogon in Fajardo. We suggest renting a car if you are planning to stay at this resort because restaurants and attractions are far away. If you plan on self parking, it is best to rent from Avis b/c there is discounted parking for Avis cars (keep all your parking receipts, they may accidentally charge the parking to your room). Enjoy your trip!

June 19th - June 24th We have just returned home after a five night stay at the Westin Rio Mar in Rio Grande. The resort is absolutely gorgeous but I do believe that they have a bed bug problem. Each morning my husband and I and our three children (ages 15,18 and 23) woke up with bites all over our bodies. I had read other people's reviews before we went but didn't believe the "bed bug" concerns. They are true!! If you do stay at the Westin Rio Mar, please take a shuttle from the airport and rent an Avis car from the hotel. It will make the trek to and from the airport sooooo much easier. Do not book tours through the hotel-do it yourself. We went through Eco-tours for a snorkeling outing and saved $35 dollars on each of our tickets. In fact, we followed the Westin's shuttle bus to and from the snorkeling site. With a family of five, we saved a bunch. We also did the Bioluminescent Lagoon tour with BIO BAY Ride, with Captain Miguel Suarez. He has been doing these tours for over thirty years and has great stories and information to share. He makes the experience exceptional. The traffic in San Juan and further to the east is outrageous!!! It takes forever to get to even a location 5 or ten miles away. Please drive defensively because no one uses their signals and people constantly go through red lights. It's really dangerous. There is no need to go to Luquillo beach if you stay at the Westin. The Westin has the most gorgeous beach ever! The Puerto Rican people were very kind and friendly. The service in restaurants and the many roadside stands was extremely slow-even the fast food places took forever. Just be prepared to wait. Old San Juan is really beautiful and a must!!!!

After reading the reviews on this site, I was a little scared of what we would find at the Westin. Not to worry, everything was great. Yes, food is expensive and hotel is secluded from other restaurants, but you're on vacation. The concierge named Pebbles was a big help to us and answered all our questions. We ate at Don Pepe's for PR food and it was great. Loved the grounds, the beach and the quiet pool. All we wanted was 3 days of sun, food and fun, we got it! Never did see any bed bugs or employees unwilling to help us. Our spacious room faced the mountains, was clean and made up every day. A great stay!

We stayed at the Westin Rio Mar for 5 days. We had an excellent time. However, we did go during off-peak season. You will need to rent a car. (cost for parking is $10 per day and $5 if you rent an Avis car) There really isn't much within walking distance. We only had one meal at the restaurant which was way over-priced. There is a wonderful bakery as you are making the left from Route 3 to the road that leads to the hotel. They make fantastic breakfast sandwiches. There is also a good restaurant called Las Vegas wich you will pass on your way to El Yunque rainforest. Bring lots of bug spray. Oh, and the staff were all very nice, polite, friendly. The hotel bake shop does great Tres Leches cake.
