Our family of 5 just returned from the Wyndham Rio Mar for a 7 day vacation. The Wyndham check in was very easy and our room was ready upon arrival. We stayed on the 6th floor in a Caribbean Suite that overlooked the pool and the ocean. It was a squeaky clean, completely updated room that had a king bed in one room and the connecting room had a pullout sofa, that was also incredibly clean and private space for a roll away bed for my youngest. The room with ,the view, when we opened the door the first time, honestly took my breath away. The room looked like it had never been used! It was a stunning room and view!
We spent plenty of time at the pool and hot tub and the beach. We rented a Cabana 2 different times and really enjoyed the ones by the beach the best. The kids could run between the pool and the ocean and we could enjoy the beverages and food that was delivered.Melissa, who runs the entire outside space, was particularly helpful in helping us find fun places to eat off property. She was even kind enough to give us her cell phone number and we could text questions that we had.
The concierge staff was also incredibly helpful. Our family of 5 (ages 14,11,6) all went horseback riding for 2 hours, ATVing (without the 6 year old), hiking in the rainforest and kayaking the bio-luminescence bay. Our favorite dinner was at Hacienda Caraballi, the same place as horseback riding and ATVing. A family runs the restaurant and makes the most delicious steak I have EVER had. We liked it so much that we ate there twice. Another memorable dinner was at La Cava del Terrior, also very close to the resort. We didn't take our children to this restaurant so we could enjoy the panoramic view at sunset and also enjoy the tapas and wine. It was an incredible meal and a true foodie place.
The service we encountered at the Wyndham, as well as the entire island, was second to none. There is still an element of "island time" but the locals appreciate tourist and are very kind and helpful with recommendations! There was no "island attitude".
We will be going back to the Wyndham again next year. The kids loved it, the parents loved it. The fact that you don't have to deal with the slowness of customs and you can carry-on all of your bags makes it the easiest island we have ever been to.
We ran into the General Manager, Danny Williams, who treated us like he had known us forever and he was as gracious as the other members of the staff. It was a fantastic vacation.

Came here with my husband on our baby moon and were honestly disappointed. The rooms really vary and there isn't much to do here. The property is nice looking but very sleepy and uninviting. If we didn't have a car, we would be very unhappy.

The staff is very nice and accommodating, and the area is ok but you need car. Don't eat at the hotels- go to the kiosks at liquillo! Great food there.

Rainforest is nice. Was able to hike to the waterfall at 8 months pregnant! Bottom line, you get what you pay for. Prices were cheap and hotel was just alright.

I almost cancelled our reservation after reading some bad reviews, but boy am I glad I didn't! It is a beautiful resort! We did not get a refurbished room but it was not bad at all. The walls needed to be painted and the bathroom fixtures need updating but there was nothing that effected our trip in a bad way! The pools and beach were very nice and plenty of chairs for everyone. We ate at Iguanas Pub a couple times, good sandwiches! Wednesdays get 20% off food. Tiki bar also has delicious sandwiches. Friday nights at Marbellas is a buffet and entertainment. The Spanish tapas buffet was excellent! The entertainment could have been better. Very pricey but the best food I had all week. $3.50 for a doughnut at the snack bar is crazy!! There is a bakery 5 miles north on Hwy. 3 (la Familia 3) with awesome baked foods and they also make excellent breakfast sandwiches. If I do it again I would rent an ocean villa and go to the grocery store for our own food.

My wife and I went with our two boys (16&13) March 29 - April 4. I have read many reviews here before booking and regarding the negative reviews, I am not sure what sort of perfection people are expecting these days?

This resort is fantastic and has a good mix of being able to be romantic or completely social. We found the staff to be charming and helpful. The grounds were expertly manicured and gorgeous. The pools are incredible with plenty of great seating (no fighting for loungers). We stayed at the family pool, but they have an adults only pool and a small baby area with fountains that looked to be fun for little ones. We spent lots of time poolside and the kids would play basketball, bocce, water volleyball and corn hole with us and other kids. If you like to walk or exercise, the beach is great. We did not even notice the renovations going on and were only aware of it through reading these reviews. We had a suite that had been renovated and it was fantastic. We loved the balconies and used them every day.

Regarding food, yes it's expensive but not more than other resorts and if you pay attention, there are specials at a different restaurant at the resort each day listed on the walls in the elevator and around the resort. We also went out to eat off the resort several times for lunch and dinner and guess what….it's expensive off property also! Tips for the resort, our favorite restaurant onsite was the asian Shimas. We went on half-priced sushi night and ordered an assortment of rolls that were on special plus a couple orders of Dim Sum and it was delicious! We ate at the Tiki bar (poolside) for lunch most days and I didn't think it was expensive, $6 for chicken strips, $13 for Angus burgers are the same that we pay here in Raleigh. They even gave the kids refills on their sodas while they were sitting there. They also had 20% off at Iguana's Pub one night. Just pay attention. One day, we ate the buffet breakfast and it was expensive, but we planned ahead and made it brunch. So, it was comparable to what we would have paid for breakfast and lunch and everything they served was fantastic, especially the omelets! Finally, drinks. Again, pay attention, everyday they had a $5 drink special, one day rum drinks, next day tequila drinks, etc. Also, they had a shaker you could buy for $22 that you could refill for $16, it holds the equivalent of about 5 drinks. I drink beer and they were less than I pay at NHL hockey games but still expensive, similar to a cruise or other resort.

For the negative reviews regarding service, you have to understand the culture in the places you travel. No one in PR is in a hurry, we found the service in the resort much superior to service at restaurants and places offsite, even McDonalds took forever. We ate breakfast there on the way to one early morning excursion.

Do yourself a favor and get a rental car at the airport. I could write another review with great things to explore off property and the concierge can help you get anywhere you need to go. Lots of cool stuff within 30 minutes of the resort. Also, if you have your own car, most of the excursions give you a discount since they don't have to provide transportation for you.

The kids haven't stopped talking about it and wondering when we can go back again!

Dear Valued Guest,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for taking the time to let me know about your recent stay with us.

From reading your notes I can see you definitely took advantage of some of our 11 restaurants, oceanfront pools, and pristine ocean in front of the hotel. We are much honored to have such assets and privileged oceanfront location by the El Yunque Rainforest and feel much honored to share them with our guests. It certainly fills us with great pleasure to hear how much you enjoyed your stay and on behalf of our associates at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar, we thank you once again for sharing and staying with us.

We look forward having the honor to serve you again in the near future!

Stopped here for lunch. Pool and beach are really nice. Grabbed a bite to eat at the Tiki Bar & Grill, which was a fun atmosphere with great views. Experience took a turn for the worse when we were trying to leave the parking garage. The attendant tried to charge us for double the time. We spent 5 minutes trying to explain that the timestamp (shown in military time) was only 2 hours prior, after which he lowered the price, but still overcharged us. We gave up and left. It's one thing to go to a resort (even for lunch) knowing that you'll pay more, but annoying when you get wrongly overcharged for something petty like parking.
