“Relaxing stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013 via mobile

Location of hotel is 40 min from San Juan. Resort food is good and fairly cheap. Staff in casino were great. Pool was very nice. Only downside, they allow pets. Dogs were barking at the pool, not so relaxing then!

My wife attended a conference meeting November 14th to the 17th. We extended a vacation until November 20th with our son. After reading many reviews I went on this trip with negative expectations. Our experience was very good. While checking in the girl told us they add $100.00 each day to your credit card for possible occurring room charges. ( We were not happy about that). We wanted to pay cash for our meals and did not want them charged to our room. You can't do that. You either must put the meals on your room or pay with a credit or debit card. The only places you could use cash was the E.R.L. and the resort store. They ask for your room number for "research" purposes. So we kept every receipt we had for the week. Upon check out, no problems. Unless you leave the resort there is no where else close to eat. They got you!! After a few days we figured some less expensive ways to eat there. Breakfast buffet for three was $77.00. The buffet was nothing special. Order off the menu and save a few bucks. We also did muffins, donuts coffee and tea at the E.R.L. one day. Lunches, first day we did the Tiki Hut. Waited over an hour and a half for a burger and chicken fingers. Burger was no cooked well enough for me. After that day I decided to walk off the beach into the E.R.L. and get a personal pizza and some soda's, brought them back to the beach which was enough for the three of us. I think pizza was $12.00. Then with more research, soda's at the E.R.L. were $3.50 so I went to the resort shop and soda there was $2.29 then get the pizza at E.R.L. Also a liter bottle of FIJI water was $7.00 at E.R.L. It was $5.00 at the resort store which is only about fifty steps further. We also ate at the lobby bar more than the restaurants. I can't remember our waitress's name, but after our first day we were greeted with a bigger smile and acknowledged of our return to eat there. ALL OF THE FOOD COMES FROM THE SAME (ONE) KITCHEN. centrally located. The food was not bad tasting, just a little pricey. Bottom line, not enough selection for food because you a basically stuck there.
We had no problems with our room. Use caution when walking on the tile floor in your room, slippery. No bed bugs issues for us. Our room was always made up by the time we returned between 4 and 5 pm.
The beach was nice. water was great, even though there was a rough surf advisory the whole time we were there. (I think O.C.M.D.) is rougher sometimes. Plenty of beach chairs. One day they ran out of umbrella's but it was a very sunny and hot day. Beach attendants were very helpful.
We took a tour into Old San Juan through Dragonfly. James was our guide. He was very knowledgeable with his narration throughout our tour. A little hard to understand with his accent but very glad he was our guide.

Let's start with the good -
1. Beautiful Grounds / Property
2. Pool / Beach area is Awesome
3. Great Restaurants on the Property (4 Total - we tried 3 and they were all very good)
4. Good size rooms and huge bathrooms
5. Very comfortable beds

Bad -
1. ANTS.... our room had ants every time we came back from being out somewhere. Pretty annoying to be dealing with when youre on vacation. Went to the front desk to tell them, and the woman down there said 'yeah they're all over the place'
2. Rooms need updating pretty badly

Room Tip: you either have a view of the rainforest or a view of the ocean - not bad either way

Multiple things went wrong with our room/stay for our one year wedding anniversary trip. The line at the front desk was always very long and slow moving. Quote of the week was "we're waiting on the hotel more than they are on us". Checked in after waiting 30+ minutes in line, bugs in bathroom, dirty floors and couldn't unpack due to strong smell of mildew in drawers. The guests in the adjoining room sounded like they were in our room due to the lack of insulation or barrier between the rooms, waking us up constantly through out the night. The light from their room also shined through the gap under the door which we blocked with towels. We woke the next morning to wait in line another 30+ minutes at the front to have them change our room. They told us they'd switch our room to a room without an adjoining door and would call us when it was ready. They told us to enjoy breakfast on them at their buffet. At 4 with still no call about the new room we waited in line again about 15 minutes to check on status of room. Still not ready and told again they'd call when it was ready. Got back from dinner around 8 and after checking messages, still no call so had to once again go to front desk. This time they said it was ready (no call) but they did not have a room for us without an adjoining door but this room was attached to a suite which was unoccupied. We checked in and the room had higher ceilings and a better view but the drawers still smelled of mildew, floors were just as dirty and the patio was shared with the "unoccupied" suite. We stepped out on the patio and there were guests staying in the adjoining suite. Luckily they were quiet but they were smokers which made us not want to use our shared patio all week.
Keys wouldn't work for new room the next morning; had to go back 2xs before waiting on security to let us in. Apparently you have to let the door slam and then pull it shut really hard. In room movie service didn't work after waiting for them to send a service person down and reset multiple times. Once service man left and came back to say he fixed it we were ready to head out for the day but it still didn't work that evening when we returned. Our valuables got stuck in the safe because batteries died right as we were trying to open it and leave. Had to wait again for security to fix and replace batteries. The batteries they brought with them were also bad and we spent another hour waiting on a fix. $50 expedia credit and "comped" breakfast didn't show up on bill when we were checking out so had to wait in line again to adjust. Will not be returning unless they renovate and change ownership. The outside grounds and pool/beach were nice which is why it wasn't a one star rating.

As for the positive points: staff extremely courteous and helpful, lovely beach. WiFi worked well and was included. What we didn't like: the first room we were offered had a really depressing view of the parking lot and covered entrance of the hotel, to the extent that we only wanted to keep the curtains closed... The second room was nice enough except for a terrible, musty smell. The third room was fine except that neither phone worked, which was fixed the next day. Restaurants: some were closed or unavailable except for private parties, much of the same menu for the others, less exclusive restaurants. Expensive food: for instance, the breakfast buffet was 16-24$, before taxes and tips, and not particularly impressive, certainly not for that price. Since there was no refrigerator in the room, it was impossible to keep any fresh food for lunch or snacks. While the beach was very nice, many of the lounge chairs had seen much, much better days and the very few boogie boards available were in very sad shape. Since there were very few activities that we could do at the hotel itself, it would have been nice to be able to visit the surrounding villages or San Juan for a reasonable price but that was not the case: the round trip fee to the San Juan airport, for instance, was 75$/person... We were told that taxis were at least as expensive and that there was no public transportation available. Had we known, we would have rented a car for our 8-day stay even though we would have cringed at the steep 20$/day fee for self parking: this is not a large, busy city with little land available after all... In summary: would we go back: absolutely not! Paule B and Rejean R

Dear Valued Guest,

We are glad you enjoyed our lovely beach and the friendly service of our staff. Thank you for your review. Thank you for sharing your experience related to our food prices. We have themed restaurants that are priced according to what we serve there, but we also have less expensive options available for the enjoyment of our guests.
• Barista Cafe with its casual, family friendly atmosphere is the perfect place for a quick bite, light meal or grab and go snack and is open from 6am – 2am every day.
• We also have Iguana’s Pub for everything from chicken wings and nachos to Caesar salads, steaks and local food options with the pricing of any sports bar. Iguana’s Pub serves breakfast on weekends, so guests have at least three breakfast options at the Resort.

We have every desire to address your needs and provide the best accommodations and solutions available; that is why, if requested, we provide refrigerators at a small cost. We do not have refrigerators in all rooms because for various reasons not all guests desire or require their use. As with any business like ours, the greatest advertisement we can have is word of mouth from a satisfied customer. It is my goal to retain you as a satisfied customer and will hope to serve you again in the future. Again, I highly appreciate your feedback as it will assist us in becoming better at what we do.

We hope you will give us another chance the next time your travels take you to Puerto Rico.

Sincerely,
Danny Williams
