We stayed here in mid-October for 7 nights. On arrival in Palermo, we were greeted by heavy rains, but fortunately the next day the sun emerged and temperatures were, by our standards, pleasantly warm. Casa Malavilla stands atop a hill and from the beautifully landscaped gardens stocked with interesting trees and shrubs, you can see right across to the sea. There are sandy beaches not far away and at this time of year they’re not overcrowded.
Whilst it’s very tempting to spend the entire holiday relaxing in the gardens, there are lots of things to see and do in the area and if, like me, you’re a fan of Il Commissario Montalbano, you can see some of the settings for the series in Modica, Ragusa Ibla, Punta Secca and Castello Donnafugata.
We stayed in one of the apartments, which had huge, light, airy rooms. Ours was very well equipped and our host, Bettina, had thoughtfully provided the wherewithal for our first breakfast. Bettina and her son were very hospitable and welcoming, suggesting places we might like to visit, not that we had time to see all of them so it looks as if we’ll have to return next year!
