“Wonderful haven of tranquillity”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

We stayed here in mid-October for 7 nights. On arrival in Palermo, we were greeted by heavy rains, but fortunately the next day the sun emerged and temperatures were, by our standards, pleasantly warm. Casa Malavilla stands atop a hill and from the beautifully landscaped gardens stocked with interesting trees and shrubs, you can see right across to the sea. There are sandy beaches not far away and at this time of year they’re not overcrowded.

Whilst it’s very tempting to spend the entire holiday relaxing in the gardens, there are lots of things to see and do in the area and if, like me, you’re a fan of Il Commissario Montalbano, you can see some of the settings for the series in Modica, Ragusa Ibla, Punta Secca and Castello Donnafugata.

We stayed in one of the apartments, which had huge, light, airy rooms. Ours was very well equipped and our host, Bettina, had thoughtfully provided the wherewithal for our first breakfast. Bettina and her son were very hospitable and welcoming, suggesting places we might like to visit, not that we had time to see all of them so it looks as if we’ll have to return next year!

Last March, we stayed in the cottage at Malaviila House. This agriturismo is in a great location for visiting the baroque towns of Modica, Ragusa and Noto, as well as exploring the beaches and towns along the southeast coast of Sicily. Malavilla House is located just 8km from the sea, with views of the green hills, old stone walls and the Ionian Sea from the lovely patio.
The cottage has two large bedrooms, a bathroom, sitting room and large kitchen with a dining table and wood burning stove for heat. It also has a large table and comfortable chairs on the beautiful patio—the perfect spot for a sunny breakfast or picturesque sunsets. If you're looking for a peaceful and relaxing place to stay, this is the spot.
This Sicilian masseria is not an active farm now, but there are still cattle grazing nearby and lush surroundings. Bettina, the owner, is a gracious host who provided us with her own olive oil and wonderful marmalades. She also showed us around the farm and encouraged us to pick oranges and lemons from her orchard. She and her son Ranieri gave us great tips about where to go in the area and information that you don't find in the guidebooks. We can't say enough about their warm Sicilian hospitality.
If you decide to try Malavilla House, be sure to get good directions. The only drawback is that there is no signage right now, so you really have to know where you're going. But once you've arrived, it's easy to get back on the main roads to explore the area or get to the beach towns.

Room Tip: There are two apartments and a small cottage. We enjoyed the cottage for our group of 4 people.
