Estreito da Calheta area info

Hello all,

We have our flight and car booked for the last weekend of november. We have not booked our accomodation yet. We are looking for a quiet relaxing stay where we can do some hiking during the day (nothing too intense) and eat some great food and drink good wine in the evening. To obtain something a bit more chill and secluded, we are thinking of staying further away from funchal.

We came across Atrio hotel in Estreito da Calheta, has anyone stayed there or know any info about the area (hikes, scenery, food). Any other more quaint and secluded area suggestions are welcome!

Many thanks,

Ben

Hotel Atrio: Sorry, don't know it but there are reports in the TA site, anyway;

Hiking: You are more limited that in other parts of the island for local walks and you will need a car. From the southwest coast you could drive up onto the Paul da Serra, or up to Encumeada by the new roads or do the Levada Calheta in sections. The eastern half of the island is better and more varied for walking.

Scenery: You will get big sea views but because of the lie of the land you are unlikely to get views of the mountains behind. You do get the only good beach on the island at Calheta. And you get good sun in that part of the island.

Quaint: I love the village of Jardim do Mar down at the sea a few miles to the west of Calheta. It has a simple but pleasant hotel, albeit a bit dated and Joe's Bar which is a must visit. A quaint alternative to the east of the island is Porto da Cruz, a realy lovely little quiet sea village right under Eagle Rock but the hotels in the village are simple residentials, look at Costa Linda.

If you want a hotel with great food, that is away from everything, 2 hotels come most to my mind:

www.quintadofurao.com (in the east) and www.pousadadosvinhaticos.com in the centre of the island.

From Quinta do Furao there's a great walk to be made (see www.sunflowerbooks.co.uk/madeira.htm ) and others in that area by your car.

Pousada dos Vinhaticos has a great view but walks not right from the hotel but higher up from Encumeada pass.

Another one further west is www.hotelpicodaurze.com , but the 2 restaurants are nothing special. But with a car you could do a tour to all 3 hotels.

Another one with good food and great location is

www.eiradoserrado.com but I would not stay there for a whole week.

I have been in all 4 hotels and all have something special to recommend it for.

All of these hotels usually have always rooms available, without reservation, except when a large group has booked it but that will be rare.
