Tavernas in Plaka

Does anyone know the real name of the taverna in the square in Plaka that was known in our villa as "The Fat Lady Taverna"?

There are a few tavernas in the square in Plaka... I can;t recall names unfortunately but hopefully others may do. I was staying just outside Plaka & often walked into the village for dinner.

The restaurant/taverna you're referring to is known locally as Fotini's (not sure if that's spelt correctly). There is also the Elpis and Takis' bar/taverna.

The name of this taverna is "O Xarokopos". Very good taverna and open all year round.

I think somewhere along the line we are are muddling Plaka's on this thread, that's a problem in Greece where placenames are reused all over the shop.

Fotini's place is always popular and when you've been once you're a regular and she knows your face, name and family history! A big lady and an outsize personality.

Yes, it's O Harokopos. In my opinion, the best taverna in the area.

If you like home cooking, local natural products, good value, friendly family service, you'll like it here!

Was there this week for stewed green beans, winter salad, fried mushrooms, grilled fish, stewed octopus... E11 per head!

Now, JWugg, you are giving away one of the island secrets - cheaper off season food! We tend to visit in the early summer, then again in late summer and again for 2 or 3 weeks in the "winter". It is noticeable that the limited number of tavernas that open in winter reward their clients with better value - we too ate out in the Apokoronas in January (starter/main courses/2 drinks each/free dessert & raki) for around 20euros a couple.

More tourists should give it a go in the winter and risk the rain, it's a better time to explore and the locals have more time for a chat too
