Marigot Bay vs. Rodney Bay

First trip to St. Lucia. Will be renting a condo or villa for ten days. Which is the best area Marigot or Rodney Bay for a group of Sr. Citizens? Interested in beach, snorkeling, touring the island and good restaurants. Any other advise would be appreciated.

Bon jour willoboat123,

No matta young or old...

Soufriere at the center of The Pitons World Heritage Site.

Beautiful properties (fully staffed) on the road to Anse Chastenet, in Malgretoute by the Petit Piton, in Rabot Estates in the hills behind the Pitons...

Bless up! Paul

PS: not much of a beach in Marigot Beach

Rodney Bay over Marigot Bay hands down. Marigot is beautiful and worth a visit, but relatively isolated and you have only a very few restaurants with a very small beach that fronts the yacht harbor. Also - very steep hillsides for walking around. Price to get out and about to the rest of the island.

Rodney Bay is flat, very easy to walk around and over 20 restaurants and bars in an easy 10 minute walk. Several excellent hotel options or several hotel with suites/kitchens options, or several condo options. If you are out of Rodney Bay village, in Rodney Heights or the like, you will need a vehicle or taxi to come into the Village for dining and the like.

Soufriere is absolutley the heart of the island for the natural wonders that St. Lucia offers - snorkeling, diving, the Pitons, waterfalls, plantation tours, and so on. There are many wonderful villas in the area with amazing views, etc. Most all villas come with housekeeper/cook and so on. Not a lot that is easily walkable, but you are close to the main sights and experiences of the island and the beauty of the area can't be beat.

3 good areas, but of them, either Rodney Bay for the easy walking/dining options or Soufriere for being in the heart of the island wins, at least for me. Marigot is lovely to visit for lunch or dinner, but there is little there and it can be expensive to do tours from, not to mention extra travel time either south or north.

ALl the best - enjoy your visit!

Recently returned from a 2 week vacation at Marigot Bay. While it is beautiful, there is no beach and limited activites.

Had I done more research we would have done a week in Marigot Bay and another week elsewhere.

Marigot Bay is very nice and it is easy to get to move around from there (and reach many interesting places) by local (and extremely cheap) minibuses once you have made it up to the main road (about 15 min walk, mostly uphill starting from the bay). We felt generally easy and safe everywhere in the island during 9 days but on 29 November we met a young Russian couple who had been robbed (by guys with machete and handgun) on the dark passage just few hundred meters from the bay (about 7 p.m.). After that we were also warned by a local police officer to not walk that road in the dark. It's a pitty actually because Wednesday's parties at JJ's on the hilltop offer great food (such as grilled tuna etc) at very reasonable prices. So, safe way to to enjoy this is to go by car or perhaps find some friendly local guy (such as security guy 'Yellow') as a companion.
