It depends what you want to do in Macau: if your main interests are among seeing the history, bargain shopping and eating, then Sofitel wins because it is in easy walking distance to the historic centre.

If you are there for the gambling, gimmicks, and high end shopping, then Venetian is where your preferred activities are centred.

Completely different experiences for both hotels, in different locations, different class, different room (venetian is all suite), different prices, one is an apple, the other a potato. Is an apple better or a potato?

With out telling us more its very hard to advice.

I would prefer the venetian if budget allows. Suite rooms, plenty of shopping, grand canal experience, short bus ride to historical macau..etc

I wouldn't stay at the v if you paid me - giant shopping ,all, crawling with Mainland day-trippers and 20 min walk from your room to breakfast! Sofitle wins hands down!

- just shows we are all different so how can we advise the OP when we don't know you!

Venetian is a huge complex with quite a bit to offer. The pool area is very nice, far superior to that of Sofitel. The canal shopping area is an attraction on its own but you don't need to stay there to enjoy it, you can visit anytime, same with the casinos. They have free shuttle service as well. Rooms are much bigger than Sofitel.

Sofitel has one of the hidden gem French restaurants, called Prive, in town and a nice Art Nouveau decor lobby bar that we like. Rooms are fine and views from pool area are nice in the evenings. Location is much better if you prefer to be within walking distance to the Historic City Centre. They have shuttle service to the main ferry terminal but not the airport or Taipa ferry terminal if memory serves correctly.

+1

I strongly recommend the Club floor offer at The Sofitel it is well worth the premium.

But if it is The Vegas type experience and shopping that you want - which is what 90%+ of visitors come to Macau for - then The Venetian.

Zhuhai, fyi, i NEVER stay in the venetian, much prefer the Westin, which has great service (I often get a free suite upgrade), no casino but very comfortable.

Westin is now "Grand Coloane Beach Resort".

The name says it all. It is still a tad run down for a 5*. But it is delightful. However it is probably not what 90%+ of people travel to Macau for.
