There isn't really much in Vila Real de Santo António to be open. It's not a tourist resort.

They have a lot of shops selling linen and cotton goods for no particular reason I can fathom and the usual town centre shops.

The centre of town has restaurants and cafés.

There is a small marina and a little ferry that runs once an hour across the river to Ayamonte in Spain.

There's no beach actually in town, it's about two miles out. I cycled there a couple of weeks ago.

"lot of shops selling linen and cotton goods" they exist in all the towns/villages that receive regular visits from our spanish neighbours.

Yes, it's true now you say it. Do they not sell such goods in Ayamonte or are they very expensive?

No idea, I think it's one of those things/traditions similar to the portuguese "tradition" of buying "caramelos" when going to a spanish border town/village. We can find them in almost any supermarket in Portugal, but still buy a package when in Spain.

VRSA is a working town that gets day trippers year round so it is always "open."

We find the place quite agreeable with several nice kitchen stores and food shops.

Hi cubsur

Thank you for all the information.

Whilst we are visiting Vila real do you think it is worth the ferry trip over to ayamonte for a few hours to have a look around or not?

Do the ferries run every hour in early april and if so what time do they start & finish?

Many Thanks
