Berlin to Frankfurt Oder to Poland and back

Hello:

Late September I will be in Berlin. I'd like to cross the Oder just to step foot in Poland, as some relatives have come from there. Is there anything to see just across the border? How far is the station where you get off from Berlin to the bridge across the Oder? Is there customs or any hassle to walk across the bridge and then back very quickly? Is there something to see from the Seelow Heights battle? I am a WWII history buff and will also be visiting the D-Day landing beaches. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

You can take the tram #1 to the stop Magistrale. Approx. 600 meters from there to the Polish side of the river Oder.

From Berlin to Frankfurt the VBB tariff applies. A zone to zone local public transport tariff. Covering all local public transport in both cities.

From: Berlin Hauptbahnhof

To: Frankfurt (Oder), Magistrale

Slubice (the former eastern suburb Dammvorstadt of Frankfurt (Oder))

Is the museum in Frankfurt Oder? I have to walk 600 meters off the tram to get to the bridge? Can I walk over the bridge and what is on the other side? Is there customs to check through? Are there other tourists there doing the same thing? Thank you.

The Seelow Heights, and the museum, are ~30km away from Frankfurt/Oder. And you have to walk ~1,9km from the train station to the bridge. There is not much to see on either side. Slubice is a former suburb of Frankfurt without any sights. In the last 20 years the town was mostly known for its "Polenmarkt" (Polish market), which were something like huge flea markets. There are no customs checks (Schengen area), and many Germans still cross the border to go shopping on the Polish side.

What customs??? Both Germany and Poland are part of Schengen Agreement.

Since Frankfurt(Oder) is not a terribly exciting place and Slubice just a residential suburb type of place, I cannot imagine why there would be other tourists there. Locals on a cheap shopping trip, yes, enough of that....

Instead of Frankfurt/Oder, which is a really boring place, you could also visit Szczecin, which is ~2h away from Berlin (by train). The old town was mostly destroyed during, and also after the war, but Szczecin should be much more interesting than both Frankfurt/Oder and Slubice. Another possibility would be Görlitz. Görlitz is 2:40h away from Berlin and one of the best preserved towns in Germany (4.000 listed buildings and maybe soon a World Heritage Site). Like Frankfurt/Oder the eastern suburbs became part of Poland after the war, but unlike Slubice Zgorzelec actually offers some sights, like a small old town which currently gets recosntructed, or a huge Wilhelminian building which looks like the Reichstag in Berlin.

... but bear in mind that you will only be entering what has been Poland since 1945, as of course all of those cities were firmly in Germany for centuries before then. It you want to do it 'properly', then maybe it might be better to go to Zbaszynek and walk across the 'border' from there https://ssl.panoramio.com/photo/70134909 There is a direct train at 0950 which takes 2 hours. Or, better still, stay on until Poznan.

But then the borders of Central Europe have been so fluid over the years that it is all splitting hairs, really ...

Sorry, altamiro I have to respond. I'm going to Berlin for the 1st time in April and have put Frankfurt/Poland on my list of must sees. Why? Coming from a small island at the bottom of the world and 3 hours flight from the nearest county, the concept of a land border crossing doesn't exist (even our 2 islands are a 3-hr ferry trip apart), and the idea of walking over a bridge to another country is pretty neat! Ok, it would be more exciting minus the open border, but still, I can say I've been to Poland where I wouldn't be going otherwise.

Maybe it isn't the most exciting place to visit and no doubt Europeans don't even think about walking across a land border, but it's fun to be able say I did.

Kay I see your point! And rest assured: to me as a "Wessi" (West German), being able to walk the Neiße bridge from Görlitz to Zgorzelec meant a lot, too. Until 1989 this border, which played such an important role in German and European history in 1945, was as far away as the moon to us. Being able to just go for a walk into Poland feels like a miracle.

Görlitz is unfortunately a bit too far for a day trip from Berlin, the old town is probably the finest destination of all along the German-Polish border. If you have time for an overnight stay you may want to consider Görlitz. To give you an idea:
