Good day trips from Pienza

My family and I will be staying in Pienza for 3 nights and have planned to go to Montepulciano for a day trip. What other towns should we see on a day trip, either combined with M. or a different day? We are traveling by car with a 3yo and 1yo.

Pienza itself is pretty but very small, a nice base to return to but you can see it in the afternoons of your three days. Siena is an absolute delight and is deserving of a day. Pop into Monteriggione for lunch or a short break. Just a perfect little ring of walls crowning a hill. Montepulciano is almost next door to Pienza; make sure you see the lovely complex of St Biagio below the town. It is a nice spot for a picnic too. You could certainly combine that visit with Cortona or Arezzo or maybe Montalcino. Then there is San Gimignano, worth a visit though quite touristy, for the towers, the piazzas and the church.

If you head toward Montalcino be sure to head south of there and see the Abbey Sant' Antimo. Lovely abbey and beautiful location. The monks still chant and you might be there to hear it.

Leaving aside several famous places such as Siena which are easily reachable, you have nearby a cluster of very interesting towns, villages and monasteries as well as beautiful scenery in the Val d'orcia all the way to Monte Amiata. The main ones are marked on this map: www.valdorcia-info.com/map_vadorcia.htm All of them are "child-friendly".

Pienza is also close to a number of hot springs. The tiny village of Bagni Vignoni is very near Montalcino and is a lovely little town to take children to. The centre of the town is a large, very picturesque pool (no longer used. Very near the parking area, are limestone furrows of warm water which drain down to the bottom of the hill into a river. There were many children playing in the water and grown ups just sitting and resting their feet in the water.
