Driving to Santa Teresa

Hello -

We are flying into LIR early feb and renting a 4WD. We're staying the first 2 nights in Ostional and then planning to head to Santa Teresa. What do people recommend about driving? Do we have to take hwy 21 around to Montezuma and over or can we take the "coastal road?" I recognize the coastal road is more of a path is some places than a road, but am interested in your opinion.

Thanks!

This site is your new best friend:

You can take the coastal road, it is a dirt road for most of the way and it entails fording a number of rivers. There are a number of posts discussing this route and you may want to do a search for them and check out directions.

If you are not adventurous, then take the paved route that takes you to Nicoya, Jicaral, Paquera, Cobano and then Santa Teresa. You by-pass Montezuma at Cobano (where you turn off the road to go to Montezuma or carry on straight through to go to Santa Teresa/Mal Pais).

Hope your drive was safe. We drove from Tamarindo to Santa Teressa and the roads (unpaved) for the last two hours of our trip were the worst we've encountered!
