Support Locally Owned businesses- THE LIST...

The most common wish I hear from visitors to Holbox is that they hope it does not turn into another Playa del Carmen. My thoughts are the best way to do this is to keep the locals in business, happy and prosperous to not sell off their families' land.

So what follows is a list of LOCALLY owned businesses that I find to generally be more consistent (meaning the same chefs and employees- mostly because they are family owned) and in the case of the restaurants, to serve the local food as it has been prepared here for generations.

BREAKFAST:

FRUTERIA LA ROMANITA: On the main road in front of Monkeys store. (One block south of the square) Fresh fruit store. Sometimes will have fruit salad or cut fruit and almost every morning the best liter of orange, grapefruit, or mandarin juice in a bag on the table in front of the door for about $1 USD.

LOS CORALES (NO SIGN): Directly behind Hotel La Palapa, this family cooks out of their kitchen, providing the best empanadas I have ever had. They also serve tamales, enchiladas, salbutes, etc. Try the empanadas made with cheese (queso) and chaya. For the more adventurous, they should also have Raya (ray) and Cazon (baby shark) empanadas.

LOS CHALECOS: Located one block west of the square, a few doors down from Viva Zapata. Also great salbutes, enchiladas, sopes, and my favorite, chalupitas. Great deep fried breakfast of champions.

LUNCH:

BUENA VISTA GRILL: Directly behind Hotel Faro Viejo. Holbox’s best ceviche, cold beer, grilled fish and lobster, octopus, conch, etc. Conch is considered to be an extreme aphrodisiac and fertility symbol. Wonderful place to spend the afternoon looking at the ocean. (Note: the view is only blocked by the one wall- not the restaurant in front that is beach front- no longer local).

LOS CHIVOS: On the main road 1/2 block towards the beach from the square. Pink building. Panuchos, quesadillas, etc. Also homemade chicken soup daily (caldo de pollo)

POLLO MAGO: In front of the square on the west side. Daily specials and mainstays.

PALAPA DE COCO DURO- A.K.A. COCO BEACH: On the beach next to Holbox Dream hotel. Fresh fish, ceviche, and fresh coconuts picked by the wonderful family that runs it. (It is believed that if a local offers you a coconut you will return to Holbox- and if you take it with alcohol- well, that;s what I did….)

RASTA PALAPA: On the beach in front of Hotel Casa Sandra. Food changes daily depending on the catch. True local experience with wonderful local fishermen. Grab a hammock and relax…

LAS PALMAS (OR “CON LETY”): From the main road “Tiberon Ballena” up towards the ferry pier take the Paseo KUKA (there is a rentadora on that corner) and go two blocks west. Local seafood and daily specials.

ZARABANDA: One block towards the lagoon from the pizzeria on the square. More seafood, stuffed avocados, Veracruz style whole fsh, and regional favorites such as poc chuc

AFTER LUNCH TREAT: ICE CREAM!!!! Two blocks towards the lagoon from the Pizzeria on the square- WORTH THE SEARCH! Homemade waffle cones and natural coconut ice cream…mmmmmmm

If you cant find that one Helados Meresa is also local and sold almost everywhere, the main house is on the street behind the church. Just ring the doorbell…

WONDERFUL LUNCH TO GO:

CON MOISHA: At the bakery- take the road where the pizzeria Edelyn is and walk towards the lagoon a few blocks. Grilled pork ribs and cutlets and chicken sold by the kilo accompanied by rice, beans, salsas, and salad.

LA POLLERIA: On the main road a few blocks towards the lagoon from the square. Daily grilled chicken with a simple pasta soup, rice, and cabbage. Sold by the 1/4, 1/2 or whole chicken.

DINNER:

VIVA ZAPATA: 1/2 block west of the square. Local guys who have spent time cooking in Europe. Wonderful grilled seafood and steaks and pastas.

PIZZERIA EDELYN (CON CHEFO): On the southwest corner of the square. Famous lobster pizza and other menu options. Great place to watch Holbox at night.

BUENA VISTA GRILL: See lunch- also open for dinner

LOS CHIVOS: See lunch- also open for dinner

CHACARITO: One block towards the lagoon from Internet Antonio. Regional food- sopes, panuchos, chicken soup, etc.

INTERNET:

DON ANTONIO: One block West of the SW corner of the square. Clean, comfortable, cheap intenet access.

Tony is also the guy to ask about buying land- I know nothing so PLEASE DON”T ASK!

Note: Tony is now running the internet part of the café internet “Mi Caprichio” on the West side of the square. Sip a cappuchino while connected without the overly excited game playing kids. Paty, a wonderful Italian does the bakery but Local Tony proceeds from all Internet time.

BABY SHARK: On the road from the hotels to town.

SHOPPING:

ARTESIANAS LELIA: On the SW corner of the square. Wonderful shells and shell crafts, many mad locally by the owner herself at great prices. A must see!

All of the super/mini marts are locally owned. Remember prices will be a bit higher than mainland Mexico. After having made the trip here from Cancun yourselves, think of the logistics of getting everything here!

WHALESHARK TOURS:

O.K., this is a good one. ALL boats leaving from Holbox to see the whalesharks are locally owned. The captains and most guides are locals as well. But, if you reserve through your hotel or another agency they will obviously take a cut. Prices are generally the same but I find it easier to simply reserve once on Island with a local agency (Willy's, Cholecos, Mogels, etc.- some of those also have web sites, your best bet is the worse the English, the more likely they are to be local...) Generally there is room to get on a boat even in the highest of season so no reason to reserve through another agency. This applies to all tours and transport. A huge money maker for the hotels- better to get here and ask the locals.

Hope you Enjoy Real Holbox!!!

This is the most informative post I have read on the Isla Holbox forum. My husband and I are going in April and it has helped us to know more about the island than just what we have found on the internet. We like to experience a more intimate feel of the place with the people who work hard to make sure we as visitors are comfortable and entertained. After all... they are sharing their home. Thank you.

We have eaten daily (sometimes breakfast and lunch)at Los Corales. Look for the green and yellow building behind Hotel La Palapa, which the hotel west of Faro Viejo. All the food is fantastic there and breakfast is very inexpensive there. Lunch gets a bit more pricey $120 pesos/plate but still good - had the shrimp ceviche for lunch and it had to have 3/4 pound of shrimp.

The Fruiteria LaRomanita is great to load up on your fruit for the day. Make sure you grab some of the green apples (they are very sweet) and the little/mini bananas (also sweet - would make a super daquiri). The juice bags are 15 pesos. Also check the bucket under the table as it has bottles that are somewhat chilled filled with fresh juice.

Los Chaleco also serves some very good ceviche so don't forget about them for a quick lunch or afternoon snack. A good bargain for 70 pesos. Try the mixto - octopus and shrimp - yum.

Pizzeria Edelyn - for all you lobster lovers - forget the lobster pizza as its a bit pricey for our budget and go with the lobster spaghetti which is LOADED with lobster. My wife has eaten 3 times already this trip and we estimate it has to have approx 12 oz of lobster meat in it. A good deal for $120 pesos versus $220 pesos for the medium lobster pizza.

There is also a nice little family taqueria on the main drag, east side of the street, half way between the beach and the square. Wonderful tacos at night.

Palapa de Coco Duro - may have had a small name change but it's right there directly east, on the beach, of Holbox Dream. The family is wonderful and the fresh grilled fish is fantastic. If you see the sign "Hoy Pompano" it's a must stop. We had a grilled pompano (firm white meat with a texture and taste similar to swordfish) and two cervezas for 120 pesos - priceless. So far, this was my wife's favorite - even over the lobster spaghetti.

I'm still in search of Con Moisha - ribs sound very good - as my first attempt came up empty- Milikis any more directions there would be appreciated. I also need to find that ice cream place!!!

Lastly, don't forget about the street vendors in the evenings around the square for desert - try it all - we did and it's great.

Con Moisha is right by/in front of the bakery(panaderia). Starting at the pizzeria, walk about 3/4 blocks towards the lagoon. You'll see it on your right. The Casa Ejidal and a produce store is across the street from it. On Sunday mornings you can buy cochinita pibil there. It's excellent.

I'm an aficianado of the roast chicken at the Polleria across and up the street from Willy's. You can get a whole roasted chicken with all the fixings for 90 pesos - plenty of food for 4 people.

I am so glad that you are enjoying these spots and thanks, INX for the clarifications. I think the palapa de Coco Duro is named La Palapita- most locals know shops and restaurants by the names of the owners and not by the given name- so a lot of those were included.

The ice cream guy works out of his house- if you see a little ice cream cart in front of a shop- that is it. Try the Cono Dulce (homemade waffle cone).

Also, it is Semana Santa right now so many places that are usually only open for breakfast are staying open all day, also some times of year there is hardly anything in the square so take advantage- try the marquesitas especially for desserts.

A few others that have come to mind-

Home made popsicles- at Suemi's next to internet Don Antonio, try the coconut and the peanut too.

Drinkin...

Tuch bar- small palapa with swings in front of Faro Viejo (independantly locally owned). A great spot for the sunset and because it is so small a great place to meet people!

Caraoicas- (the Disco) Does food and then a late night disco- very very local, more kids than anything at the disco.

Enjoy and keep adding to this list so we keep it at the top of the forum please!! Thanks!

What about Calibri? They have wonderful fruit plates and juices. I practically dream about jugo de mango con leche when I am home. I thought the business was local although the property was owned by someone off island.

Colibri ( SW corner of the square) has my favorite ambiance of any restaurant in Holbox and is owned by a wonderful couple who aren't from Holbox but have been here for years. I made my list using only locals (mostly from the original 12 families) but there are many more wonderful places to try in Holbox as well. Supporting any small business is a great idea to keep the chains out and as of yet all businesses here are small and one of a kind. My list, however, supports the people who so graciously invite us to their home. Holbox was a different place not long ago and I wholeheartedly feel it necessary to give back.

Thanks!

What a fountain of information! I am continuously printing this stuff out and keeping it in a folder so we can have it to relect on when we go to Holbox. Is there a local business where we can buy alcohol and mix our own drinks back at our bungalow? I am assuming there isn't much of a wine selection so we can stick with tequila or rum because I really don't want to be bothered transporting it from Cancun, etc.

Willy's mini-super has a selection of wine and spirits, none of which is inexpensive since they bring it in from Cancun :)
