I don't know about the Renaissance, but we stayed at the Aston Waikiki Sunset back in 2002 and we loved it. I've seen mixed reviews, but you'll be in HAWAII. We spent very little time in our room ... usually just there to clean up and sleep. The walk to the beach was nice. We had an ocean view 1BR with a full size kitchen and could also see Diamond Head from our room ... we were on the 32nd floor.
We did have an experience the first night we were there that we still talk about. Due to weird circumstances, I had not been asleep (with the time change) for almost 35 hours. After taking some sleep aid, I had just fallen asleep. Thankfully, there was nothing wrong, but the fire alarm went off around 10:30pm. My sister came into the room and said that we had to go downstairs. So we did .... down 32 flights of stairs. No offense to any older people out there (I'm getting there too), but we walked around like old ladies for the next 3 days. Our calves and legs were so sore. BUT, the gorgeous fireman that was in the lobby showing us his tattoo's made the trip down worth it ;).
Whichever hotel you choose, I hope you have a great time. We will be going back in October and will be staying at the Aston Pacific Monarch. I can't wait to see a Hawaiian sunset again!!
