Lobster Rolls?

In 2008 the Mr and I visited Boston for the first time. One of our favorite discoveries was the lobster roll. Does anyone have a favorite place for a lobster roll? There is no such thing in Texas and our craving has gone unquenched for too long!

As always, your insight & opinions are greatly appreciated

I have heard others rave about the lobster rolls at Brick Alley but haven't had one there myself.

We don't get excited about lobster rolls since we are spoiled and live here!

For most of us, Lobster rolls are something you make with the leftovers from your lobster dinner the nite before!!

I was surprised that they seem to be written about quite a bit!

Here's a link to an interesting blog with pictures from different restaurants

James Hook makes a very good lobster roll. Alive and Kicking in Cambridge makes an excellent lobster roll, more like a lobster sandwich though. Belle Isle is popular, but I found it to be completely tasteless. If you have time to drive up to the North Shore, JT Farnhams and Woodman's of Essex , both in Essex, are fantastic. I have pictures and such at lobstergal.com

Thanks for the feedback Y'all. I especially enjoyed the pictures Emily.

I never thought about it, but I suppose in New England a lobster roll is about as mundane as Mexican food or BBQ here in Central Texas. There are more places to get both around here, then I can count. For that reason I'd never think of either as 'vacation food'. ;-) If all else fails we can always return to the place in Boston where our love affair began... Neptune's Oyster. In fact we will regardless if we are successful in Newport or not. To Y'all it may be just a 'sandwich' but to us... it's an amazing treat! :0)

LOL...it all depends on where you're from!

Hmmm a lobster roll is still kind of a luxury for me in RI, however in Maine they probably come 2 for $10. RI's seafood specialty really is fried clams, richly decadent and delicious. La Forge Casino is know for their lobster rolls, although the rest of their menu gets just ok reviews, the tables outside in front of the historic grass tennis courts are unique, you might even catch a tennis ball.

If you want to wander about RI a bit, Harbourside Lobstermania in East Greenwich has a fabulous warm lobster roll made with butter, not mayo. It's really, really good, and the restaurant is on a marina, so it's a wonderful RI summer spot to have a lobster roll and enjoy a drink. East Greenwich is a very pretty town with some nice shops, if you're inclined. It's famous for it's bridal shops.

Thanks Hillside! I'll check out La Forge Casino and see what they have to offer. Also, thanks for letting me know about the fried clams. I'll add that to my 'must try list' for our stay in Newport. Any places in particular you know of that serve good fried clams?

Lauryc, Our one and only experience with lobster rolls was in 08 at a place called Neptune's Oyster in Boston. You could either get your lobster roll hot with butter or cold with mayo. The Mr. & I got one of each, thinking we'd share. That didn't happen because once we tasted our roll (mine was the 'hot with butter' one) neither of us was willing to give up even one bite! Maybe this time I'll try the 'cold with mayo' one. ;0) Sadly, I don't see how we could possibly add one more place to our packed itinerary, but I've already decided that Newport is a place I want to return to someday. :D
