2 nights in Flagstaff or go elsewhere?

I have had great advice from Tripadvisor members so far in planning our trip so here is another question. We are on a road trip in May and leave Sedona on a Monday morning, then need to be in Vegas by the Wednesday evening. We were planning to drive from Sedona to the Grand Canyon south rim, then have the monday night in flagstaff, then the following day and night in flagstaff before driving to Vegas. My question is, is it a good use of time to have 2 nights in flagstaff, or would it be possible to go elsewhere from Sedona for a night, possibly monument valley, then do Grand Canyon the next day and just a night in Flagstaff from there?

We don't mind driving at all, and want to see as much of Arizona's spectacular sights as possible as it feels unlikely we'll come back, at least for many years. We are early 30s and not super outdoorsy so not planning to hike in the GC or anything.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Flagstaff is a nice town, but at the time of year you're visiting, and in light of what you want to accomplish, I vote for staying inside the park at GCNP, then moving on to Page/Lake Powell. It's only 2.5 hours from Grand Canyon South Rim, has a lot to see and do (Antelope Canyon, Lake Powell, the Glen Canyon Float Trip, just to name a few), so plan to stay at least 1 night. Then when it comes time to head back to Vegas, you're ~ 5 hours away. The drive from Page to Las Vegas naturally takes you through Zion National Park as well, which is beautiful as well and warrants consideration for at least 1 night stay. map ->: http://goo.gl/maps/89Zy5

Agreeing. I see no reason to stay in Flagstaff at all. Choose one night at the GCNP (book that reservation right now) and two nights at Page. This is all assuming that you will have had plenty of time already in Sedona. Most visitors who spend less than three nights at Sedona wish that they had planned more time there. You'll understand why once you arrive.

Thank you both! We will have had 3 nights in Sedona, really looking forward to it!

We had been thinking about Monument Valley, is it the sort of thing that can be done in a day in a normal rental car or do you need to book tours?

We hadn't thought about staying inside GCNP as we weren't planning on hiking or anything, is it still worth t and where should we stay?

Thank you again!

Re: Monument Valley, the 17-mile scenic drive through the valley itself is unpaved, so driving a rental car on it is not recommended. You would be held liable for any damage you might sustain since that constitutes off-road driving and as such would void your insurance.

So a tour would be recommended, but also make sure you have the time to do the place justice. It takes ~ 3.5 hours to drive from Grand Canyon South Rim to Monument Valley, then another 2 hours to drive to Page. Due to the remoteness of the area it's recommended that you stay overnight there if you can.

As for staying inside GCNP, you DON'T have to hike or do anything "labor intensive" in order to appreciate the many advantages in-park lodging has to offer. By staying inside the park, you are able to experience sunset and/or sunrise easily, for example. Some of the properties are located right on the rim, which won't necessarily offer you a canyon view, but still you can walk out your back door and there you literally are. But, at this point, all the in-park facilities may be full, so check on it ASAP. Visit www.grandcanyonlodges.com or call 888-297-2757 If nothing is available inside the park, Tusayan aka Grand Canyon Village South just outside the park is your next best option.
