Camping near Flagstaff in June

We are a family of 5 (2 teens, 1 tween) who will be arriving in Flagstaff from I-40 eastbound the 3rd week of June. We will be tent camping and are fine with campgrounds that have no showers. A picnic table is nice although we are not opposed to dispersed camping if need be. Prefer campgrounds with few to no RVs, and will use it as a base for sleeping three nights, but pretty much be gone all day. We’ll go to the south rim of the GC (will have been at the north rim earlier in June) and also want to see Walnut Canyon, Lowel Observatory. We will also visit Sedona and Sliding Rock Park there. Most likely leaving by way of Phoenix to drop off one of us at airport .

What are thoughts on camping at one of the campgrounds in the Mormon Lake area which looks like it is now called Flagstaff District according to the Forest website. What will the evening temps typically be around June 15th?

The best place to camp to go to GCNP is in the campground at GCNP called Mather. Mormon Lake is over 2 hours from GCNP, and about an hour or more from the places you want to visit around Flagstaff. To answer your question about night temperatures, it would normally be in the 60s at night.

Just west of Flagstaff on Route 66 is Woody Mountain Campground. Has RVs but separate area for tent camping. Just south of Flagstaff is the Ft Tuthill Coconino County campground; some RVs there sometimes but no hookups. If you need no facilities, dispersed camping is permitted in some national forest areas. Check the website for Kaibab and Coconino National Forests.

I'd suggest Fort Tuthill.

Scroll to the bottom for a little info and a phone number to call for reservations.

You'll be about an hour and a half from the south rim of GCNP and 45 minutes from Sedona. This is a county park, not commercial. Very forested.

Weather-wise, you may or may not encounter monsoon season at that time, meaning there may be some afternoon thunder showers, so be prepared for that.

If monsoon season has not started yet, there may be camping restrictions here and in the forests around Flagstaff due to high fire danger, so be sure to inquire about that when you make reservations.
