Native Baskets

We'd like to buy a basket as a memento of our visit to Santa Fe this week, but would rather not pay the outrageous prices I remember seeing when we were there last fall. Does anyone have a suggestion about where to look to avoid Santa Fe gallery marked-up prices? Thanks.

Well, if you're lucky, maybe one of the folks selling under the portal at the House of Governors will have baskets. I love talking with the artists (or their families) who actually made the items for sale there. If I understand the rules correctly, there's a lottery-like system for the right to sell there each day... so there are usually different folks each day. Good luck.

Thanks for the response, rochesterwoman. I don't remember seeing any baskets last year at House of the Governors, but maybe we'll get lucky this year. Leaving tomorrow; can't wait.

Not that anyone cares, hahahaha, but thought I'd report back on this...

Like last year, we again didn't see any baskets for sale at Governor's Palace. Lots of other nice stuff though....... and for cheap. One of these times I'm gonna buy one of those bola ties and start a trend here in Portland. :-)

We DID find some baskets in the gift shop at Bandelier. I figured I'd probably be paying too much for them there, too, but thinking it might be my only chance, bought one. Good idea! We saw some very similar ones the next day in a gallery on Canyon Road selling at 4-6 times the price we'd paid at Bandelier. Lesson learned; don't buy anything on Canyon Road (except maybe for a Tim Nicola sculpture).
