I did a search for topics talking about great Tex Mex restaurants to eat on the River walk, but did not really see anything so I thought I would post a new thread.

I am looking for two great places to eat on the RW.

1-A great breakfast place, that can either be your normal pancake kinda place or a great place to get breakfast tacos. They dont have to be in the same place, but giving you a better idea of what we would like. Or even a nice bagel/coffee kinda place.

2- A great Mexican restaurant, Tex-Mex kinda of place.

If you have any websites to offer with your suggestions that would be great! We are leaving this Thursday!!

Where all did you eat NYCS?

Pesca has good food, not great. It was better before an ownership change, but I still enjoy it. The best dining near the Riverwalk, (over it, not on it), great even, is Le Reve. It blows everything else away. Try it if you make another trip. Reservations necessary usually weeks in advance.

Technically of course, there is only one 5* hotel (that's a Mobil rating) in all of Texas, the Mansion in Dallas.

I don't think anyone has ever claimed that San Antonio was a mecca for superior food. Next time, maybe you should try LeReve or maybe even some of the trendy places in Austin. There is just not alot of money floating around SA for pumping into restaurants that may or not make it.

Next time I would suggest focusing on just Mexican food...and find the local joints.

OO: I can't remember the name of the place we ate on the River Walk (not in my travel diary--that's how bad it was) but we had dinner one night at Little Rhein Steakhouse. Awful. Old lettuce, rancid butter. As a Texan, my husband is pretty picky about his steak--both of us got mostly gristle. The best food we had in San Antonio wasn't in a restaurant but at the Historic District inn where we stayed. The Oge House. Katy made breakfasts and brunches that rivaled anything we have ever had anywhere. (She's a CA graduate.) The best eating in Texas is at Aurora Maison de Cuisine in Dallas, although I have to say that we have had wonderful meals in Terlingua, Fredericksburg, Pecos, and at an ordinary sandwich place in Study Butte. El Paso is a wonderful place for foodies, too. For my money, Austin's food is over-rated; I'm not a fan of Hill Country barbecue. I'm always disappointed in this Texas forum because you'd think all of Texas was just Dallas, Austin and San Antonio.

P.S. We didn't eat at La Reve because as a New Yorker, I don't want lobster when I'm in Texas, or goat cheese! I can go to Chelsea Market or Gourmet Garage and find 15 different kinds of gourmet goat cheese. We found the menu disappointing, overwrought, so we skipped it.

Thank you for your suggestions. As with other forums the most common cities will be highlighted. Most people who are visiting Texas are going to our three main/well known cities (Dallas, Houston, and Austin) which is why most people are asking about those.

Having lived in Texas my entire life I do agree that there are many wonderful places to visit and eat that are between those larger cities such as some that you have mentioned.

Sorry things aren't up to par for your standards/taste.....any luck with Biga or Liberty Bar?

Hopefully, things will improve. San Antonio did become a location for CIA.

Texas Monthly and Teaxs Highways might be able to give you some hints on places not located in DAL, SAT or AUS.

TejasHombre: I don't need advice on Texas. I was complaining that the Texas Forum was BORING--that most visitors to Texas think only in terms of those three cities. I've crisscrossed Texas many times and am there very often.

Excitd:

Ok, I asked my sister and her best friend, SA locals...They recommend,

Tomatillos Restaurant for awesome Sunday brunch. It is on Broadway, not too far from RW.

www.tomatillos.com

And Jacala's. I'm not familiar with where that is, but it is supposedly great food.

Hope you enjoy your trip!

Even if you don't eat at Mi Tierra's, go in there. Go to all rooms and look at Mexican decorations and wall murals. It is a festive place!

For steaks NYCS, I'd definitely do Bohanans. It also won editors choice in the Best of the City issue of San Antonio magazine.

I love Le Reve...don't ever recall seeing lobster on the menu there though. As a New Englander, I eat it one way only...boiled, and that would not fit with their dining room--crisp white linen, fresh flowers, simultaneous service. Nope it needs to be from the pound, down and dirty. :> Back to Le Reve, the New York Times food critic gave it rave reviews in a very long, glowing, article in that paper, proclaiming that not only was it the best restaurant in Texas, it was one of the best in the US. Their tasting menu is the thing to have

I walk past Oge House every weekend...love the looks of it. It seems that it'd make a nice romantic getaway even for San Antonians.

Our favorite Tex-Mex here is Rosario's. It was also the Readers' Choice from the Best of San Antonio. Paloma Blanca was the editors choice. We began our quest for great Tex Mex when we lived in Dallas and the Lemmon Ave Uncle Julio's and Belt Line Cantina Laredo were our standards. Rosario's is not as good as either of them, but the best I've had here. I pass Freddy's while walking weekends and am anxious to give that a try. If the people populating it are any indication, I'd guess it's pretty good.

Come back and give us another try. Hit the Liberty Bar too, for fun and their left leaning atmosphere.
