Best gluten free in San Antonio? |
|
Needless to say we are going straight from the airport to Little Aussie Bakery for lunch - for anyone who doesn't know, this place is 100% gluten free and they have a bakery too! Here are other 'top rated among Celiacs' places we're considering for our other three meals out: *Paloma Blanca *Biga on the Banks *Las Canarias (heard it's stuffy here and husband won't wear a suit except to the wedding...) Are any places above anywhere near The Alamo? That's what we're doing on our only full day in town. How long should we allow to visit there? Husband reads EVERYTHING he can find to read at places like this... I already know they can accomodate gluten free patrons - now I just want to know what glutenoid diners thinks of them. We'll probably only do one high end dinner (over $100 for 2) and I'm leaning towards Biga on the Banks for that right now. Thoughts?

Biga and Las Can. are on the river. Both are good. I have never heard such about Las Can. i.e. having to wear a tie, suit. The Cove is walkable (walk towards the central library, then up San Pedro past the Jack in the Box, take a left at Cypress, then walk another 2 blocks) or an easy taxi ride. I would catch some music there if you have a chance. It a mixture of a car wash, laundry mat, snack bar, music bar, playground. These two may also be worth a look: Twin Sisters Bakery and Cafe 6322 N New Braunfels Ave San Antonio, TX 78209-3826 Phone: (210) 822-0761 The Food Although the definition is a loose one, Twin Sisters is generously recognized as one of the city's few veggie-friendly restaurants. Turkey burgers, pork-chops and other meaty surprises pepper the menu, but plenty of sin carne options exist (penne pastas, avocado sandwiches), in addition to a daily rotation of soups (the chicken tortilla here is one of the best around), pizzas, enchiladas and specials ------ Adelante Mexican 21 Brees Blvd San Antonio, TX 78209 (210) 822-7681 Although the term "healthy Mexican food" seems like an oxymoron, somehow these folks make it work. While it is a little off the beaten path, any restaurant that can make enchiladas, refried beans and tortillas low-fat, healthy and delicious is worth a visit. Your best bet is to try the tamales, the enchiladas or the chalupas with sides of Mexican rice and either refried or black beans. For an interesting twist, opt for the whole-wheat tortillas. Splashed with wild colors and funky ethnic decorat... …yahoo.com/p-travelguide-19250156R-adelante_… -- these two are near the McNay museum and in walking distance of each other

I Believe Biga on the Banks is your best bet, it is close to the Alamo, on the Riverwalk, Has excellent food & spectacular view of the River & near the Alamo. The best part is the Food is excellent there & service is superior. This is a great place to go & eat. Here is the website Have a great time in SA

pruske25 - thanks for the link to Biga on the banks. Definitely going there after reading many glowing reviews from both Celiac and glutenoid patrons. tejashombre - I feel so bad you went to all that trouble listing about places that are in no way good for someone with a gluten allergy (me) to eat. Unless someone at the bakery you listed is confused, they do not offer any gluten free baked goods and the gluten free menu offerings are some salads. You mention whole-wheat tortillas from the heathly Mexican place....gluten is WHEAT, rye and barley. I know people without food intolerances some times lump us all together...they hear gluten free and think vegan, dairy free, etc. A vegan diet is very high in gluten, unless a person chosing that diet has Celiac disease. For example, most 'meat-less' meat products (usually eaten on a vegan diet) are made mostly of WHEAT. Thanks for trying to help anyway.

So Promopro what types of food can you eat. Meats and vegies? What about other carbs like rice or potatoes? Bar-B-Que seems like a natural choice around here.

Yes, we can eat rice, corn and potatoes. We also eat gluten free bread, pizza, pasta, cookies, crackers and about anything else we want - as long as it's gluten free. So far there are only two things I can't find a great gluten free version of - croissants and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. There are some fabulous gf doughnuts, but they are nothing like a KK, and the only croissants I've found come from France but are not worth the money. For baked goods we use flour mixes that combine many different flours such as quinoa, buckwheat, soy, tapioca, rice, potato, corn...there are well over 100 gluten free flours available in the US. One would think BBQ would be a good bet for us and one of my goals for my gf dinner club is finding a BBQ joint to take our members to for dinner next year. So far each place I've contacted uses malt vinegar in the sauce. Malt is made from barley which is gluten. There are many gluten free bbq sauces at the store, but not so many of them in restaurants. All malt is not made from barley but most of what the US produces is. It's rare to find one derived from corn but it does happen.

I don't use BBQ sauce on my meats, personally I don't care for most of them. I feel if the meat is good you don't need any sauce on it, IMO. Here is a place to check out, they very good.

Ah yes, I believe true BBQ does not even contain sauce. Personally I do prefer sauce. That BBQ joint looks like a landmind for someone with Celiac but I think it's great they will be on TV! It must be pretty good indeed! We have all our meals set for the trip in SA, Austin and Dallas. Well, we do have to go to the rehearsal dinner now which is a kink for me. I have to wait to get the invitation to call the Mexican place chosen and see if I can eat there. If not, I'll have to eat before I go, take my own chips in and order some cheese dip for them ;). Such is the life of a Celiac..lol!
