 Halloween

It's just around the corner and we can't wait. Considering we are first timers...

Are we better off going to a large party at a hotel and staying all night or bar hopping?

Can you drink on the street walking around?

Is there a particular area that is better than the other? Ie: Essex Street or Salem Common?

Thankyou in advance for your comments.

Hi Bino- Salem is already a mad house and will only get worse during the coming week. If you have not already, please read some other recent posts from visitors to Salem who were stressed out about the crowds, just so you'll be prepared. The police are cracking down by issuing more fines to people who are drinking "nips" on the street (huge clean-up problems and vandalism in past years), but that is not to say that you can't have fun, just realize what you are getting yourself into. There are packed crowds and partying everywhere, no specific area is more fun than others. can't advise re: hotel or bar hopping, as it will be a different experience either way. not sure if you are driving or taking public transportation- there is a fireworks display near the train station just prior to the last train back to Boston, which departs at 11pm. some roads will be closed so traffic will be difficult to say the least. but people still have fun, I'm not trying to be a party p**per, just honest :).

Thanks Boston!

We are staying at a B&B in Salem that is close to everything, so we'll be walking everywhere. I've read about the crowds and I'm okay with that. I just wanted to know if we'd be better off staying put or fluttering around. We'll find our niche!

Thanks again!

I would definitely flutter about if the weather is good. Jamming yourself into a bar and staying there would be quite silly. You can do that at home. There will be at least two bands playing outdoors and that is where the action is. Dancing outside and watching all the other crazy costumed folks dancing is great fun. Also people walk around and take photos of the best costumes. People work hard on their costumes and love to be asked for a photo. It is fun to have dinner at Rockafella's as lots of people will be dining there in very extravagent costumes. Don't plan on bar hopping as the lines are 50 people long and you won't get in. If you can't have fun without booze, nip back to your B&B for an occasional cold beverage then hit the streets again. DO NOT DRINK IN THE STREETS. There will be a massive police presence and they will show zero tolerance. The evening will close with a laser show on Washington Street and fireworks by the train stations. After this the massive police presence will aggresively shoo everyone out of town at about 11 PM. They are saying that the night after Halloween should be fun with lots of people still in costume.

Leaf, we have way too much fun not drinking alcohol. A few drinks would just keep us warm! Can't wait!

So what are you going to be? I won't tell anyone. We will be a pair of giant spiders, so look for us. My husband will be in top hat and spats. Have a great time. Leafy.
