What are the nearest, safest areas closest to the Balloon Fiesta? My sister and I will be traveling with our 80 year old mother for her bday.

Are you planning on driving to the Fiesta Park? If so, there are hotels on -25, San Antonio exit, and some more closer north to the park. Some of those have questionable reviews.

If you are not driving to the park, but are using the shuttle service from Coronado Center, the uptown area has numerous hotels, all within walking distance of the Mall, or you could take in one of the hotels near the I-25 I-40 junction, that would be University Blvd. and Menaul. Plenty of restaurants at both of the locations, more than you will find on I-25 on the north side of town. near the park. The fee for the shuttle busses includes entrance to the park, and busses drop you at the main entrance.

If I were doing it, I would opt for the shuttle, as traffic on the weekends into the park can be slow and heavy. And, then you would have to walk from the parking lot (charge), to the entrance (another charge). That might be more than your mother would want to handle.

I agree with sandiaman.

Closest hotels/motels are around I25 and Alameda. These are budget but I don't think you get any real advantage being so close. There are a couple of Marriotts (Pyramid and Courtyard) in Journal Center (I25 and Paseo). Those are good. There are a few at I25 and San Antonio next to Cracker Barrel. These are ok. And they are a very short hop to the Hoffmantown Church shuttle from a very good location next to the Academy. There's the Sandia Casino at Tramway and I25. There's a few around Jefferson and I25, which are new. This is a restaurant and movie theater area. All of these are along northern I25 corridor.

The Uptown area has some very good options (I40 and Louisiana). Near lots of shopping and restaurants. The shuttle is good option from Coronado Mall but you may still need to drive to the bus parking lot. You can walk but it's not right out the door.

There are several options at junction of I25 and I40. Some good ones and generally popular during fiesta.

A couple of options in Old Town. A popular touristy area. They fill early I would think. You are further away.

Shuttles are a good option to consider. You still need to get to the departure point early. And you may have a bit of a line going back.

Driving, the fees for fiesta are still pretty low. $10 parking and another $8 gate entrance. (It went up recently; not too long ago it was about $3.) If you go early you can get decent parking near gates. You may want to contact directly about "handicapped" parking areas that get you closer to gates.

You may want to look at Gondola Club. A bit pricey, but some people really like. Amenities include special parking area, food, heaters, seating with good view and golf cart shuttles down to the field. I don't know how park and ride shuttles work with Gondola Club. You should double check that.

Otherwise, potentially lots of walking at the fiesta grounds. Balloon Fiesta is not a grandstand event. Some picnic tables on edge between what is called the main street and the launch field. Most people are strolling among the 100s of balloons. If there's any concern about that, ask for more tips.
