any non tourist supermarkets in st paul's bay |
|
Staying in St Paul's Bay in July, are there any non tourist (so for the locals) supermarkets around? Within walking distance from the center would be perfect. |

Hi When staying in St Pauls bay last year we did go to the Scotts supermarket at Bar Murrad (the Road to Mosta) to get cereal toilet rolls etc, as soon as we arrived. You really need a car for this though. But to be honest we found the little mini markets on the main street (and back streets) in St. Pauls bay just as cheep and well used by locals. The cereal and milk was the same price, the bread was fresher, nothing was much dearer if at all. These little shops are all located in the centre. When we go back this year we won't bother going to the supermarket we will shop in our local high street shops - you will see they are also well used by the locals. Enjoy. Trisha

Not quite in St Pauls Bay but the smaller stores at the back of Bugibba are fine I started going for it big time last year by going to Pavi in Qormi okay so it's Malta Tesco's (actually part of the Auchan Group) good food at good prices. I'm not sure if it's very helpful to the smaller shops but ultimately I need to eat and in general am not prepared to pay more than I have to

As Scubupro said Pavi is good - there are discount supermarkets like Smart in Birkirkara, the Italian LIDL. Also Italian CS. However, the basic foods like Cereals, Bread, Milk, Eggs, Tinned stuff are not worth the hassle of getting to them from St Pauls Bay without a car and most locals buy these from nearby stores. The biggest savings are on cleaning, detergents etc What is definately MUCH cheaper in the discount stores is bottled water. From our local store a 2l bottle was 51c and from Lidl it was 27c. As it doesn`t seem that you will be hiring a car, I suggest you go to stores as far from the front as possible and you`ll also be able to see which ones are patronised by locals. If you are staying for some time with a large family you could consider Smart.com.mt - you can order online and they do deliveries but I don`t know the charge.
