Tourist towns near Richmond?

I am meeting a friend and Richmond is the middle distance between us. Are there any quaint smaller towns nearby?

How close are you looking for? Carytown in Richmond might be fun. Lots of restaurants and small shops.

There are alot of smaller towns surrounding Richmond. But what direction is your friend comming from? Otherwise if you want something small and quaint, like Wrengirl said, Carytown is a nice spot. It is a short strip and you can have a really nice time in that area of Richmond and have a nice lunch or Dinner. Also you might want to visit Byrd Park and just sit near the lake. Very nice view of friendly ducks and geese and you can rent a paddle boat to go in the lake.

Williamsburg is about 40 minutes away, small town, touristy if you like historical stuff, several really nice restaurants many with outdoor dining which is perfect this time of year.

Colonial Beach is a little over an hour away. It has been a favorite tourist destination since the late 1800's. Large steamer ships used to ferry folks from northern Virginia and D.C. for weekend fun in the sun, on the second-longest public beach in VA. Alexander Graham Bell had a summer home here, it's now a B&B. Lots of good restaurants, shopping and a Boardwalk, too.
