Excursions from Sissi

Hi,

I am visiting Sissi for the first time next month. I would like to organise a couple of trips to get away from the pool and the taverna's and would appreciate some help.

I have found a site for Jeep Safaris which do 2 routes from Sissi -Lassithi & Minoan. Any comments on which is the best please? Also the cost is 75 euro's. Is it best to book directly on their site, or could I get it cheaper locally, and if so, where?

I would also like to do a private taxi tour to take me to places of interest, local beauty spots, historical sites and of course a decent taverna for lunch and a beer or three! Is there anywhere locally that provides such a service, and if so, can you please give me an idea of the cost?

And finally (you're be glad to know!) are there any vineyards nearby where I can look round ( I could incorporate in the taxi tour)? Am very keen to try the local wine as I toured a vineyard when I was in Rhodes and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the wine.

Sorry to have asked so many questions! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I have stayed many times in Sissi but always do my own thing so can't give advice on trips but for somewhere to eat you must go to Neromilos. Wonderful food and wine and fantastic service, but would suggest you book the day you arrive as it is very popular

Hi Graham,

The jeep Safari sounds like a reasonable deal to me.

The Lassithi plateau trip is very popular.

Here are contact details of an excellent company who specialise in executive travel.

Taxi's are not cheap in Crete now and I think you might be surprised at the cost for private tours.

Enjoy Sissi!

Hi there

As long as you don't mind the walk from Sissi down to the main road, it's very easy to catch buses in either direction. West will take you to the Minoan site at Malia ( just 5 mins on the bus) and to Iraklion, the capital, where there's loads to do and see of historical interest. You can also catch the #2 blue bus from the terminal in Iraklion ( where the bus from Sissi will terminate) out to Knossos.

Milatos is Sissi's close neighbour, there are some excellent tavernas there and the caves in the hillside overlooking the village are well worth the walk.

Hi Peter

Promoting Kera tours again!!!!!!................Wow this company that you are promoting are very expensive, just looked at Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga, 35 euros!!!.....and they still expect you pay for the entrance onto the island as well!!!! The boat trips from Agios cost 13 euros....and then Kera tours want 47 euros for a BBQ and Spinalonga trip!!!....get yourself to Agios, either by car or bus.... and then take the tour with this company and cut out the middle man!!! :-)

Hi. Didn't do it myself but there is also a happy train ( 15 Euros per adult, less for children) that takes you around the local area and also to neigbouring Milatos ( famous for it's fish tavernas)

I talked to some people who went on it as they hadn't hired a car and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. :O) :O)

KeraTours expensive? Have a closer look on their website, they also offer boat tickets only (without transfer), cheapest is from Plaka 8.00 EUR / adult (www.keratours.gr/boat-trips.php…), which is the one me and my wife bought PLUS we got 15% discount on it because we had hired a car from Kera (check their special offers: http://www.keratours.gr/special_offers.php). I don't think you can get the trip cheaper anywhere else.

Also some friends of mine bought a Spinalonga excursion at Kera for 50 EUR incl. transfer from and to their hotel in Chania (it's not offered on their site though).

Peter

Hi MikeBr

Thanks for the recommendation. The Neromilos gets some very good reviews on here so I will certainly try it. I am staying at the Anixi Apartments, is the restaurant very far from there?

Hi Tynecastle,

Thanks for the information. You're certainly right about the cost of private tours; they average about 35-40 Euros an hour - I'm obviously in the wrong business! I think I'll hire a donkey instead!

I arrive on Saturday and am really looking forward to it.

Hi GB

Thanks for all the information. I am really looking forward to exploring the area.

I don't mind walking as long as it's not too hot!

Graham
