Glacier Hike

We are a family of five and want to experience walking/hiking a glacier. We are in the Denali/Anchorage/Seward/Whittier area and wasn't sure where the best place is to do that. Is it possible to just walk on Exit Glacier without having to pay anything for a tour? Also, is there another glacier we should look into? Is Matanuska Glacier any good? We would appreciate any help! Thanks!

Here is a report from an Anchorage family that spent a day at Matanuska Glacier: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g28923-i349-k46497…

Exit Glacier should be explored with Exit Glacier Guides for safety reasons, in my opinion.

No. Far too dangerous. A woman was killed there by falling ice a number of years ago. Exit Glacier Guides provides safe treks on that glacier.

If you want to play around on glacier a bit for free, go to Byron glacier near Portage (Whittier). You can also go to Matanuska on your own a bit, but there is an entry fee of $20 per adult to access it. Without crampons, you can't get to the really interesting formations. MICA and Nova Guides both have excellent reputations for their guided hiking and ice climbing trips to the Ice Falls there.
